I don't know how I never found this forum, or if I did I forgot about it. I used z31.com for years and never really found a good replacement. I see a bunch of people that post on NICO but this seems much more active. So here is my first thread......
So asking for opinions on replacing my 1984 stock wheels (4 lug NA) to get into 16" or 17" size. I called the guys are MSA and they have a Promax 17x7 or an Enkei 16x7 they recommend. Seems like both options would work, so which would be the better setup for the car and money....
17x7 Promax ($949) with 225 50 17 Bridgestone Potenza RE760 tires ($504) tires for total Damage report of $1453
16x7 Enkei Compe ($649) with 225 45 16 Michelin Pilot Super Sports ($592) tires for total Damage report of $1241
Or Keep Stock wheels and buy Pirelli PZero ZR tires which cost $1184
My Bridgeston Potenza S03's are now 10 years old so I am thinking just from an age standpoint I want to replace them.
Thoughts, i picked the 45 series for the 17" to help avoid rubbing and fit issues, I have Eibach lowering springs and KYB shocks.
Opinons???

Actually I meant 225/50 16, they didn't have any 45's in 16". They do not have 17" rims for my 4 lug in 17x8, apparently the guy told me the 16x8 I woudl have to roll my fenders due to rubbing issues.
I don't see cracking on the S03's but I am worried I bought them in 2004, isn't that really old??

Yea definitely go with 8" wide wheels, they are nowhere near wide enough to have fitment problems, even 9's fit well with the right offsets… and you could always go up to 86 or 84ae fenders in front with ae flares in the back for even more fitment options
Offset will be the important part, check the z31 wheelshow if you haven't yet for ideas

I personally do used wheels, but if you must have new, check sites like FRSport.com or NLMotoring.com.

If you are set on 17s, I'd probably do something between 17x8 and 17x9 with 235/45/17.
If 16s, then I'd do 16x8 with 225/50/16.

No they said they did have 17x8 but it would rub…anyhow, I haven't seen that link so it was good…There do not seem to be many 235 options anymore, I will check out FRSport and NLMotoring, but I can get 17x8 Primax from MSA. They didn't have 16x8 which seems like it would be a good size choice, but how long before 16 becomes yesterdays size? 17" tires are already cheaper than 16" in high performance. I wish I could just get another pair of S03's brand new and call it another 10 years.

Okay, thanks. I am having issues finding on 4 lug 17x8 wheels, if anybody knows of any let me know. The 17" ZR+ tires seem like they have a long future while 16" I can already see going the way 15" did 10 years ago.

I am a fan of 16's. It's a miata size so tires will never truly disappear for a long time… and by then you might not even have the Z or those wheels anymore for other reasons.

I am having issues finding on 4 lug 17x8 wheels.
This is your problem, your options a limited with 4 lug hubs. It's pretty easy to find a 86 NA or 84-86 turbo parts car and swap the hubs. This will open up a whole new world of wheel possibilities for you.

I know, I have thought about that many times. As a non-DIY'er I would have to get my mechanic to do this, I also remember there was a how-to guide on the old Z31.com. I am sure AZ Bum's site has this out there somewhere too. The biggest loss on the 84 NA wasn't the extra 40 horse but the extra lug [archived image: smile.png]

Hmm, there should be a f̶a̶i̶r̶ huge selection of 17's in 4-lug. A lot of 4-lug s13's run 17s.
Check rota grids, xxr 531 for examples.... tons of other rep brands make 4-lug 17s like STR or JNC as well.

I just found those XXR's. Does anybody know the quality of those wheels?? I have made the error with cheaper non-OEM wheels before and ended up giving them away as they were terrible to balance. Can anybody vouch for these? The only name brand I have found are 16x8 Enckie's at MSA…but I like the offerings XXR has in 17x7

XXR and Rota are replica brands but they make decent wheels and have been around long enough. I don't know about some of the newer ones like STR, JNC, Drag, etc…

I love my XXR's, had no problems balancing them, car drives nice and smooth. They appear to be of good quality.
