My struts are shot So I was thinking about cutting my springs this weekend and getting tokico or bilstein struts next pay check thursday I like that slammed flush look but want it stiff for drifting whats the cheapest way need some suggestions
New 2 Z: (2010-05-21 02:44:21)
you should do it. it'll stiffen the ride up a lot.
a friend of mine has cut springs on his Z31 it's not the "Stiffest" but it's pretty stiff.
sbs z31: (2010-05-21 02:52:41)
the cheapest way to do and do it right is to just do the s13 coilovers conversion, it's easy and will save you a lot of time!
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 03:24:14)
damn how much should I cut them? link?
New 2 Z: (2010-05-21 03:27:41)
oops double post lol silly me :nanan?re
New 2 Z: (2010-05-21 03:28:15)
one and a half coils will get you this, you can only get one finger in between the tire and fender barely
sbs z31: (2010-05-21 03:32:17)
s13 coilovers ftmfw!
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 03:39:09)
any negitive effects from this I want to cut front and back
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 03:39:39)
Eventually ill go coilover this is just for now
New 2 Z: (2010-05-21 03:47:00)
none at all only that it's a lot stiffer.
if you want autoX or circuit type racing don't cut them cause you'll ruin your caster.
you might hear the springs bind for a good 2 or 3 weeks just drive a lot and the springs will seat and you won't even know it was there.
khyronzx: (2010-05-21 04:23:15)
Very confused at the lack of flames in this thread
smelly$cat: (2010-05-21 04:44:44)
^^ha!
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 04:47:48)
I dont autox or circuit just drift and drag I still want to be able to go like 130 lmao my camber in my rear is screwed, already on the negative side will it make the Z handle like crap? I need the cons!
Fuzzcheek1: (2010-05-21 04:59:03)
The first con I can think of is that you'll be just like everyone else out there who doesn't want to spend a minimal amount of money to do the job right the first time.
The second thing is that your ride quality will probably suck.
FlawleZ: (2010-05-21 07:38:58)
Cutting the springs will lower the car and stiffen the ride up, yes. Is it the best way to accomplish that? Hell no. Is it the cheapest? Well yea, its practically free.
More importantly, which year/model springs do you have exactly? You can't just say 1.5 coils lowers the car X amount. It will vary depending on which springs you have. They don't all have the same coil count.
MADMIKE: (2010-05-21 07:43:28)
camber is going to be fubar, as if it wasn't bad enough with the semi rear trailing arm setup.
you get the coveted asci facepalm

stock shocks and struts? If so, prepare for them to be blown.
Robyr: (2010-05-21 15:33:01)
Hell, the best shocks in the world wont hold up the that shit. Cutting your springs is stupid, people. Just do it right. I spent a grand total of 600$ on FULL suspension, poly everything, and decent springs and shocks. Your ride sucks because you have blown struts. Replace them. Go coilover if you want to slam your car and not be laughed at (and you WILL be laughed at for cutting your springs).
I am with KhyronZX, where is the flame-brigade.
TurboDreams: (2010-05-21 15:39:07)
I also demand the flame brigade. How many people are this desperate to lower their car? I would at minimum put eibach springs and kyb struts on any car I owned rather than taking a hacksaw to my shoddy stock coils.
Robyr: (2010-05-21 15:50:27)
I second the Eibachs. I love em, and it's not ghetto. WTF people, you realize the "slam scene" is about status right? The amount of money and parts you buy make the car "cool".
Durkin: (2010-05-21 16:06:42)
how weird… its like he's standing in gas and playing with matches…
Pros:
free
easy
fun?
lowers car
stiffens ride
Low cars bring the girls (?)
can join the "no fat chicks, will scrape" club
Cons:
blows struts
emphasizes negative camber
might mess with caster
if not done well can unseat springs
if not even will make the car lean = negative status and the cool kids will like you less
not as stable for strenuous driving
Uncomfortable bouncy squeaky painful ride repels the girls (?)

QUIT BEING SO CHEAP AND BUY SOME LOWERING SPRINGS
DeleriousZ: (2010-05-21 16:25:32)
bust out the angle grinder my friend.
ShamWow: (2010-05-21 16:47:58)
Just don't post anymore mmm-kay?
NissanXRMA: (2010-05-21 16:48:41)
Don't listen to him. Do it right and either buy lowering springs, or go coilover.
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 18:09:18)
Nervermind s13 coilovers here I come!
MADMIKE: (2010-05-21 18:13:09)
if you feel like having to get tires after severe camber wear.
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 18:14:09)
Any links to making s13 coilovers fit on the Z?
Robyr: (2010-05-21 18:16:07)
Did you even TRY to search? WTF is up with the forums lately.
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 18:19:37)
Found! so coilovers is the only option to get that slammed look?
Robyr: (2010-05-21 18:22:06)
Easily, yes. The only way? No, you can use air suspensions or such, but you will be shelling out way more than coilovers. Budget 1000-1500 for the install, depending on how much work you do yourself, and which coilovers you go with.
vgboost85: (2010-05-21 18:26:02)
Thanks! I almost cut my springs today good looking out lmao
floridaZ: (2010-05-22 04:23:16)
You can cut your springs, if you just want the ride height now. Cut springs can work okay, but they aren't safe for high speed driving. I wouldn't recommend then for drifting or the autoX, but if they fall off you're on a track so nobody dies.
Easiest way to slam the car would be to go somewhere that can wind custom springs, drop it off, scream "MOAR LOW!!!" and let them make up springs to suit your needs. The "right" way is the coilovers, but that's more labor.
Moral of the story, never view cut springs as a performance modification.
khyronzx: (2010-05-24 15:36:48)
lol, now thats moar like it guys
mistah mofro: (2010-05-24 16:51:06)
GET S13 COILOVERS!, you wont ever regret it. I got my entire setup for under 800 bucks so just wait for another pay check and BOOM S13 COILOVERS!
akronz: (2010-06-07 04:00:58)
well custom rolled springs with mult springrates like what im running ran me about 350$ all the way around and shes sitting about 3" lower the only thing about MOAR LOW is MOAR PROBLEMS exhaust bumper rippage thrashing of the underbody. oh and
moar low gets the girls. No more low makes the girls ass hurt when your running to racing seats after driving through the city. and thus means you get no play when she begins to hate your car and wont even help you break in the new seats you just put in lol.
tpollingerz31: (2010-06-08 03:33:51)
Oh boy. I have a friend with a toyota supra turbo that recently decided to cut his springs. Needless to say after only one week he had one spring in the rear become unseated and a
new shock on the front blow. So not fun! My opinion, never cut springs its a mess of trouble! A spring is designed to be progressive. When you cut your springs they no longer compress correctly
putting too much strain on the shock. But hey don't take my word for it ask my supra buddy .. . . . . . LOL.
