Will a Z32 clutch work in a Z31?

My clutch gave up the ghost and I was trying to get a new one before next week when i go to PA but that probably wont happen, I'm broker than I though..

A friend of mine has a couple clutches that he messed with in his 240 RB25 swap and they use Z32 clutches…

It is a non turbo clutch setup he has

Any idea if they will work?

EDIT. ACT Seems to list the same part numbers for my both Z31 and Z32.. can anyone confirm this

I know a z32 disk will work in a z31 because the spline is the same. Dont know about the PP. Anybody know for sure??

i know a flywheel won't work unless it's redrilled from 8 bolt to 6 bolt, but that's not really relevant lol.

haha of course people know the information I don't need..

If worse comes to worse.. I'll spend the 2-3 hours dropping my tranny trying and hoping it works and post results so its set in stone..

but I would hope maybe someone has a Z32 PP and Z31 PP they can compare..

The only thing I could think of that might be the case as I checked a few differant manufacutures part numbers and they vary between Z31/Z32 NA 240MM clutch kits..

ACT's PP maybe drilled for both?

So heres the news:

A 240MM Z32 N/A Pressure plate/clutch will bolt up to a Z31 flywheel just fine.. Went to gardners today and everything lines up just fine

To completely 100% confrim this I will be installing the setup in my car next week..

Possibly.. I doubt theres any big difference other than the 10mm diameter but as far as I've played with myself I can only confirm that a 240MM N/A Z32 pressure plate will bolt up to a Z31 N/A pressure plate..

But I dont see why a Z32 TT pressure plate wont work with a Z31 T pressure plate as well

And yes this will give Z31 owners quite a varity more of clutch chices…

People with fidanza flywheels SHOULD be able to use the TT 250mm clutch. I need a new clutch so this came around in just the right time. I think i'll go with ACT 6 puck…something i know will not slip.

My friend had it in his RB25 240.. It's acctualy the clutch setup I'll be getting for free, he only used it last summer and its still good so it will work for now..

Had a great feel to it.. but the pedal is quite heavy.. Personaly I like it but thats just me

Grips hard.. once you learn the on/off threshold its a nice clutch to drive with

I actually like a heavier clutch..it inspires more confidence. Thats one thing i never liked about the dxd is it felt like stock.

I myself too like a heavier clutch, it makes it feel more sturdy like you acctualy have a performance clutch.. I suppose how you worded it pretty much sums it up..

Granted somedays when your really tired in day time traffic it does suck at times but it makes a man feel good to know that his 500lb leg presses are comming in handy :nanan?re

Yes again, I agree that the Z33 clutch pressure plate is a very substantial improvement over the standard Z31 clutch. All DXD clutches for all models except 87-89T with SS or FE-X pressure plates (not the base HD) now use the Z33 pressure plate because it offers better clamp load, softer pedal, and the same pricetag. This also allows use of a 250mm disc with the 240mm flywheels, for even more torque capacity. About time for people to start throwing those 250mm (87-89T) flywheels in the scrap pile.

Only one reason: because it is 250mm instead of 240mm.

You can't use a 250mm disc on the "240mm" flywheel with the Z31 240mm pressure plate, but you can use a 250mm disc with the 350Z pressure plate on the "240mm" flywheel.

Your Stage 4 is slipping? How much power is your car making? That can be taken care of…

Yes… with the exception of a few changes to the kit to suit the Z31, it is essentially a 350Z clutch.

the car is making only about 325rwhp but i have found that the rear main may be leaking....is there any way to save a clutch that has been introduced to oil???

ive had a z32 tt clutch in my car for six months now. its been great so far. its an 88 turbo flywheel redrilled with a nissan oem tt clutch.

As far as I know, the Z33 PP will not bolt to 87-89T flywheel; the bolt patterns are different. It will bolt to the 240mm flywheel though. You could re-drill the flywheel (which is what the Z32TT guys do to use the Z33 PP) but it's easier for us to just find a 240mm flywheel with the correct pattern to begin with.

Using a D21-pickup flywheel and clutch on the KA24DE is referred to as a "White Bunny' setup, due to the guy who figured it out and shared the info.

A stock replacement D21 clutch is bigger, and can handle something like ~400ft/lbs..all for $175 for both flywheel and clutch.

YES, the pressure plate will bolt right up, no issues

Unsure if the disk will work, spline count is the same but it may be a 250mm disk which won't play nice with the 240mm flywheel.

I'll just buy a 350z PP and disc.....a 300ZX TT throw out bearing and give it a try.

Someone said you'd need to remove the step in the flywheel, some say you should use a different TO bearing, 240 this…250 that…grind bell housing.....

I agree it is a lil confusing, but hell my simple mind figured it out. Course I played with this stuff hands on years ago so I guess it helps. Everything on this site is far from cut and dry. You have to read all 3 or 12 pages sometimes to get it all since no one ever goes through and puts it into one post usually. Just like the 3.3 swap still being a semi mystery but we have been doing it shortly after the 3.3 was introduced.

I'm afraid adding bands to a pressure plate passed me by. So, I tried to learn a bit about it.

But I couldn't find any info on adding clutch bands in edmunds.com, HowStuffWorks.com (clutches) and Wikipedia.com (clutches).

I also couldn't find a darn thing about this on any of the automotive performance forums I searched ?

I also couldn't find anything in a Google search....heck, I couldn't even find anything more about it searching THIS site.....so I'm glad you know all about this.

Where did you get your information on this? Or did you learn about it from DXD recently?

Clamping Force vs. Pedal Pressure

Designing heavy duty and high performance clutches with a very high clamp load and incredible coefficient of friction is a fairly simple engineering task. To do so without increasing pedal pressure has not been so easy. Even the education process of changing opinions that an increase in pedal pressure must accompany a high performance clutch with increased clamping force has been difficult.

Clutch Masters, after 28 years as a premier manufacturer of fine quality clutches, has taken this experience and a clean sheet of paper to re-engineer their line of performance clutches to address these problems. The proof of this success is now available from Clutch Masters as a complete line of clutch systems for high performance street and racing use. It is the first major breakthrough in performance clutches in over two decades.

Following are ways of increasing clamp load. The methods vary in sophistication and effectiveness:

Heat Treating

The diaphragm, or spring, is heat treated to increase spring tension for 10-40% more clamping force. This typically makes the diaphragm more brittle and more subject to premature failure. Many high performance clutch manufacturers use this procedure. Clutch Masters has perfected a more precise method of heat-treating its diaphragms to maintain consistent clamping force without compromising structural integrity.

Double Diaphragm.

The double diaphragm is a method of increasing clamping force by stacking two diaphragms on top of each other. This will typically achieve the desired clamping force but will also increase the pedal pressure to a very high rate. For FX 500 and Multiple Disc set-ups, Clutch Masters uses two separate heat treating processes - one for each diaphragm - to ensure perfect compatibility between the two diaphragms. Additionally, there is a special friction-reducing material between the diaphragms to provide optimum clamping force while maintaining an ultra smooth operation.

Thicker Diaphragm

A thicker (than stock) diaphragm allows extra clamping force but is considered to be an on or off style clutch. Smooth engagement is severely compromised with the thick diaphragm due to the reduced elasticity of the thicker material. Clutch Masters does not use this technique.

Hi-Leveragetm Pressure Plate

By re-engineering the pressure plate leverage ring (moving it closer to the pivot point), Clutch Masters solves the clamping vs. pedal pressure problem in a unique way. By moving the pressure ring, Clutch Masters Hi-Leveragetm Pressure Plates take mechanical advantage of the leverage principle. By moving the leverage ring closer to the pivot point, the pressure applied to the plate is increased significantly without unnecessarily increasing pedal pressure, as is typically the case in other clutches. This Hi-Leveragetm feature is unique to the high-performance clutch industry.

        • By combining these various methods of increasing clamping pressure with their re-engineered discs, Clutch Masters has developed a unique way of substantially increasing clutch performance without any of the negative side affects usually found in the typical high performance clutch.****

so, as been discussed about z33 PP.

there are several:

30210-CD010 (880kgf) for 250mm) 2002-2004

30205-CD00B (1010kgf) for 240mm only as assy with clutch disk) 2004-2005

so, which one will work with z31 240 mm flywheel or both will (and or which one will work with 250 disk)

The pressure plate is the same in the Z31 turbo (240mm) and the Z32 non-turbo. It's not an upgrade to go with a stock Z32 N/A kit. The 350z clutch kit is a direct bolt on to the 240mm flywheel and has more clamping force and a 250mm disc. However, the Z31 and Z32 flywheels have a slight 'step'. You should have your flywheel ground flat when using the 350z clutch kit as the OEM 350z flywheel is also flat. Keep in mind the stock 350z clutch it is rated for approx. 320-350tq at the engine.

they are from different years of z33, so may be some differences present but, if I catch you correctly - it doesn't matter what year z33PP I'll go to use - 2003 or 2006, both of them will bolt on to z31 240mm flywheel, but,

late - 30205-CD00B 07.2006 - 11.2006 VQ35DE.MT D240 1010KGF - will bolt on w/out resurfacing

early - 30210-CD010 06.2002 - 09.2002 C.VQ35DE.MT D250 880KGF will require resurfacing (removing of step, which is present on z31 240 mm flywheel)

Did I understood right?

The 2006-up 350z HR and the 370z have a 240mm pressure plate, it's made by LUK and has a self-adjusting mechanism. It has 1830lbs of clamping force. The 350z DE pressure plate had two options, in 2003-2004 it was the standard Exedy 250mm pressure plate with 1790lbs of clamping force. In 2005 they made a change to a 250mm LUK self adjusting pressure plate. I pulled one of these from my car, but forgot to check for clamp load before throwing it in the trash.

All clutches require resurfacing for the break-in of the material. It may take longer or never hold the torque needed if you don't. The reason they say it doesn't is because of the self adjusting mechanism.

Soo I am wondering can I use a 240mm clutch disk on my 250mm flywheel?

I have a spec stage 2 clutch and pressure plate from an na z32 and I drive an 87 turbo. I kniw the pp will not fit but would the smaller disk hurt anything? I would also be reusing my stock pressure plate.

So if i order a 350z clutch kit , I must look for a 240mm one? , I can use the 350 throw out bearing and pp?, Or a Z32 n/a kit? , The reason i ask is locally there is no where i can find and z31 clutch of any sort

I got my clutch from HorsePowerFreaks.com

They handle their business pretty seriously and have some pretty cool stuff, including a huge variety of Z31, Z32, Z33 clutches

Edit: quick question guys, in theory if I bought a Z32 flywheel and Z32 clutch kit they should swap right out correct?

no, check P/N, pathy's fly is same to EUDM turbo (ALL) and USDM late turbo, e.g. 250 mm.

Yeah, you can do that. You're decreasing size which decreases torque holding, but if you're in a pinch, it will work.

The Z33 stuff is designed for a flat flywheel and the Z31 flywheels have a .008 step. You should resurface your flywheel flat before installing a Z33 clutch kit otherwise the pressure plate will be over compressed. That decreases clamping force and could make the diaphragm fingers come in contact with the disc.

I would use the Z31 release bearing, it seems to work the best. The Z32 kits wouldn't give much more benefit then a z31 turbo kit. They have the same clamping force and you have to (SHOULD) buy a different (Z31) release bearing.

Pathfinders are a VG30E, therefor its 6 bolt just like the Z31. I have a pathfinder engine in my Z31 with a Z31 flywheel…

As far as the ring gear…its Z31. They're the same flywheel as 87-89 turbos. Why? Because They have 30As, like 87-89 Turbos.

EHMM, Early EUDM Z31T also have 250mm fly, but they had BorgWarner=)

You know what, you're right. I was basing my info on Jon Martin's car and I forgot he stuffed a Z32 crank in his VG33. That's why I had thought there was something different. My bad.

So just to confirm, I could use this 350z oem replacement clutch kit - http://www.amazon.com/EXEDY-NSK1000-OEM … B001B5E0SG - with my 88 N/A (which uses the 240mm flywheel) I just need to have the flywheel machined flat and get a throwout bearing and pilot bushing for a Z31?

did anybody ever confirm if z32 tt clutch will work on a z31 250mm flywheel i just read whole post and saw no one runnig that setup
