So I was at the junkyard and I saw a M30. I grabbed a few parts from it.
On my way home, I thought about the differential on M30's.
Are they VLSD?
Of course I searched around on the net, but honestly, most of the info is very inconclusive.
Does anyone know?

My M30 has an open diff, unsure if all of them are open or not…but its likely that most of them are.

All M30 differentials are R200 and open, just confirming since I own one. Transmissions were all automatic and RE4R01A.

FSM pic shows it to be a long nose R200. Don't see why it won't fit.

It'll fit but the problem is that this R200 long nose has an ABS sensor which makes the snout 1" longer. So, it'd be a tight fit for the drive shaft.

M30 differential is a 4 pinion open type.
If you swap over the proper companion flange from another R200 such as Z31, 280zx turbo, you find the dimensions are the same.
It's the m30 specific flange that is longer.

87-89 Z31 R200s are identical to M30 R200s.......

Dimensions are the same but not completely identical.
The M30 has an ABS sensor that mounts on a machined surface at the snout of the differential which samples the teeth of the "wheel" that is part of the M30 flange.
The difference is important to S30 drivers because it will hit a crossmember but the z31 crowd won't have that issue.

That is true. I have 2 diffs. One is factory fitted R200abs and other is M30 -92 R200abs. Only differences are gearing, finned cover and hole on top of diff for oil circulation cooling system. I am talking about euro spec 2+2 -89.
