Well, I need a new hood on my 85 Z31 turbo.

I may have a plain 86 NA hood lined up, but I dont know what to do with it. I was thinking of some real hood vents (This thing gets hot; Im sure most of yours do :P) or something but I dont know what would work well, as far as design and placement. Has anyone done a vent/hood mod? What about a cowl induction on a stock hood?

NissanXRMA: (2010-04-21 21:00:30)

Screamingflea has made a cowl induc hood out of a stock hood, but then stopped making it halfway through. Look up the thread. A lot of people have done vents. 280zxt vents look nice.

DeleriousZ: (2010-04-21 21:33:17)

check out what butter did for his hood, it's pretty slick.

What vents are those? Did he have to weld in or did something like bondo work?

I did find something, though, not sure how it would look…

http://www.up22.com/scoopw1.htm#SC-117

3" high,

26" long,

16" wide.

I *think* it could turn out okay, and best of all, its a simple install it looks like.

There is a longer one, but I think 44" is a bit too long :P

you should do it while making it functional not just for looks because it can actually effect radiator/intercooler efficiencies and make it even worse rather then improving function.

How about the 82-83 280ZX NACA duct (driver's side) and hood vent (passenger side)? I was going to do this one on my 2006 350Z GT but sold the car. I think it would look sick......

maverickxeo: (2010-04-23 05:54:24)

What vents are those? I do have an idea, I *think* it could look good and be very functional.

Put two vents like those on each side, toward the front, close to the front two cylinders/turbo.

In the middle, toward the back, put something like a mustang scoop/wrx sti scoop there.

Opinions?

khyronzx: (2010-04-23 13:38:21)

I'll see if I can get some more pics of the vent up this weekend. The spoilers still on the car, still needs a small amount of work to finish it. Don't know if I'll ever get to making a mold of it or not, won't be anytime in the near future though.

Just have a question; after lookign through these guys.

Can you run a hood without a vent/scoop on an 85 turbo? Im sure you can since the 86s didnt have a scoop and ran the same setup… I cant seem to find a scoop/cowl/vent I *really* like that arent going to cost a fortune. I was thinking about just living the hood plain for now, see how I like that.

(Personally, I like the plain look; but I want to make sure its not gonna get too hot or anything).

screamingflea: (2010-04-24 16:08:36)

Making a cowl is easy IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A WELDER AND KNOW HOW TO USE IT! This has been the main problem in my STILL incomplete cowl project. Sorry, I'm just saying this because I saw my name was mentioned; didn't read through the thread. I recommend going with vents of some sort. Easier to do; just cut the right size hole and fit it in/seal it.

HEY! Guess what? The guys at Nissan are a HELL of a lot smarter than the guys at autospeed. Unless you have access to a wind tunnel, then good luck ACCURATELY testing how well the hood scoop is performing. The little yarn trick is fine and the pressure drop is fun, but if you're going to try and design a car that way, all the power to you.

New 2 Z: (2010-04-24 19:36:44)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

guess what? it was made back in the 80's it's a mid 80's piece of shit, back when wind tunnels were JUST coming into the scene. the wind tunnels now are A LOT more efficient then back then.

the engineers today are a lot better then the engineers then.

TurboDreams: (2010-04-24 20:10:52)

Auto manufacturers are more concerned with making pretty cars than aerodynamic cars. You'd think that modern sports cars would be more aerodynamic than an FD RX-7, well guess what? They aren't. The FD RX-7 is pretty much the most aerodynamic car that isn't a Prius or Insight (aka things that aren't high performance at all).

floridaZ: (2010-04-25 13:31:09)

Every time I click "View New Posts" and see that New2Z posted last (or at all), I want to cry. And then break shit.

I've seen wind tunnel data for similar scoops before, and I see no reason to doubt that the scoop is functional. Maybe not necessary on the water cooled T3 cars (everything but 84), but functional. I can't believe that some people don't believe that something like the stock scoop is capable of letting air getting forced into the engine bay.

So maverickxeo, you shouldn't have any issues running the 86 hood without a scoop as the 85's T5 is water-cooled. But If I had to suggest a scoop; I'd suggest the proudear style, or rip off Butter's shit like everyone else wants to.

maverickxeo: (2010-04-25 22:26:12)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Thats pretty much what I wanted to hear haha.

I would like to do a hood like Butter's, but seeing as I have to be off work for a while (possible concussion) I really cant afford much more than the used hood I have.

Mitchd03: (2010-04-26 00:34:21)

[archived image: DCP_0829.jpg]

Those are '87 Pontiac Trans Am GTA hood vents, if anyone was wondering. And New 2 Z, they do function correctly on the Trans Am, with the thermo fan on and the car stopped, you can feel air coming out of them. The pressure drop test on Autospeed may not show results on these hood vents, because they are not designed to flow air using air pressure differential, they're just pretty looking holes in the bonnet.

Have you done the pressure differential test on a factory z31 hood scoop? I'd love to see the carefully documented results you got.

floridaZ: (2010-04-26 08:41:24)

The scoop I am talking about was an aftermarket one for a first gen RX-7, it's been over a year since I looked at the page but if I find it I will post it up. Almost the exact same scoop, mounted more inboard and a bit further forward than it is on the Z (in relation to the windshield).

But hey, if you want Z31-specific wind tunnel results, I will provide Zs for testing if you will pay for wind tunnel time.

I agree, since you know…the 370Z is definitely more aerodynamic than a FD…and don't even get me started on the "ugly" GTR.

StreetFighter: (2010-04-28 03:10:22)

I had two different drop vents on my hood.

I would not recomend getting a WRX style scoop on your hood. It will reduce the amount of air that can pass through the radiator/intercooler. A drop vent will reduce engine bay pressure, thus increasing cooling system efficiency. A cowl induction hood DOES NOT EXTRACT HOT AIR! Your windshield is a very high pressure area, and your engine bay is a lower pressure area. Air travels from high to low pressure. A cowl hood dumps cold air on top of your engine, and pressurizes your engine bay. It was originally made for carbed V8s where the air filter is directly on top of the engine. It is less aerodynamic to have a cowl induction hood (unless sealed against the windshield), and bad for cooling. They will vent hot air when sitting still, but do the opposite at speed.

You donot want to add more air into your engine bay than is needed. Most of the air that goes into the engine bay gets dumped out of the bottom, and produces more lift. You want the least amount of air under the car possible. Lift makes cars scary to go really fast in, but 99% of the people on this forum will never go fast enough for any of this to be an issue.

maverickxeo: (2010-04-28 03:31:48)

I did know what a cowl did; my dad had one on his old 500ish WHP Camaro.

As for those drop vents… how hard were they to put in on your hood, and would you recommend them for something running less than 300WHP? (Probably closer to 250WHP).

I thought it was that the 84-86 has like a .27cd and the 87-89 has like .29cd? I do remember that the Zenki's are more aerodynamic than the Kouki's.

Also people have to remember that your drag coefficient means nothing without knowing the frontal area of the car. If I am not mistaken, the z31 is a decent amount smaller than the Z33 G35, GT-R all of those.

TurboDreams: (2010-04-28 19:41:00)

My arguement was going to be basically part of what you just said satan. CD means jack shit. Lotus 7s have HORRIBLE CD but they are so small it hardly matters. Hummers....don't even get me started.

I have a list that I have compiled based on data from multiple different sites last may. The list is in cda, in other words drag coefficient x frontal area. Not entirely sure how accurate it is but it seems pretty good to me.

CdA (drag coefficient x area; lower is better)

Honda Insight - 5.10

Mazda RX-7 - 5.61

Toyota MR2 ~5.80-5.90

Nissan S13 240SX - 5.88

Mitsubishi Eclipse - 5.92

Subaru SVX - 6.00

Acura NSX - 6.13

Nissan NX - 6.15

Lamborghini Diablo - 6.17

Nissan Z32 300ZX - 6.23

Honda Civic SI (EG) - 6.34

Honda Prelude VTEC -6.34

Lotus Elise -6.35

Toyota Supra -6.43

Honda S2000 - 6.47

Honda Civic Del Sol - 6.49

Hyundai Tiburon - 6.52

Acura DC2 Integra - 6.56

Lexus SC - 6.65

Acura RSX - 6.66

Chevrolet C3 Corvette - 6.72

Pontiac Fiero - 6.75

BMW M3 (95) - 6.77

Mazda MX-3 - 6.79

Mitsubishi 3000GT -6.80

Nissan B13 Sentra SE-R - 6.87

Saturn SC2 - 6.90

Mazda Miata - 7.00

Nissan J30 Maxima - 7.09

Nissan A32 Maxima - 7.20

Nissan Z31 300ZX - 7.63

Acura KA7 Legend - 7.82

Bugatti Veyron - 8.02

Lotus 7 ~9.81

If anyone wants to contribute to the list feel free. Quit trying to argue that the Z31 is more aerodynamic than the FD though without further proof, 2 full points is a lot even for crappy internet information.

i'm sorry but i see this i feel this list is wrong.

so your saying a honda insight is more aerodynamic then a lmaborghnini, and a Bugatti? so, according to you the millions of dollars and HOURS spent on high performance cars on the wind tunnel in not enough, but apparently the honda insight is so aerodynamic is it more then honda's own NSX?

I find this extremely HARD to believe.

TurboDreams: (2010-04-28 20:16:14)

Why? Look a a Veyron, they are big, they have a ridiculous amount of aerodynamic restrictions in the form of it's 10 heat exchangers, etc. Oh and did I mention they have to create downforce which a byproduct of creating downforce is drag?

The Honda Insight is at the top because believe it or not they weren't designed to be as sexy as other cars, nor to be driven at 200+mph. They are small, they have covers over the rear wheels among other things to decrease their Cd.

NissanXRMA: (2010-04-28 20:42:11)

Ha My family just got a Insight. Paddle shifters and everything. LOL 1.3 L. It's very aerodynamic. Wicked fuel efficient.

They use to have rear covered wheels. They don't anymore. They look way better now.

Believe it. Honda has done A LOT of testing in the creation of the insight. They are designed for aerodynamics.

Careless: (2010-04-28 23:32:42)

to say the drag coefficient of a vehicle means nothing without knowing the frontal area is like saying a bullet with no point wouldn't be able to penetrate an object regardless of its speed.

Cda would be a better means to calculate acceleration, not necessarily stability at high speed. the Cda would be an argument better suited towards how much resistance two similarily designed objects would have to overcome while taking off at the same time, and weighing exactly the same- but with one object having a larger frontal area or being overall larger, while the Cd remains constant.

Cd in itself means much, and does not always require the interpolation of frontal area in order to measure its benefits.

TurboDreams: (2010-04-29 22:24:53)

CD in itself means nothing. It is only one factor which remains irrelevant if the other factor is an unknown variable.

It's like saying any vehicle with 1000hp is faster than any 300hp vehicle. Both of which you have no idea what they are. For the sake of comparison lets say it's a tank vs a Z31. Now your Z31 may be grossly underpowered but the tank probably weighs at least 10x+ more, has ridiculous drivetrain loss and tops out somewhere between 40-65mph. The only way the tank is going to win a race is if it's through a brick wall, regardless of your idiotic generalization that horsepower = speed. No matter what you need to know the other variable.

Are you an engineer turboDREAMS?

TurboDreams: (2010-04-30 15:44:23)

Are you posting from a mental institution sprtCRAZY17?

bleakdragonmage: (2010-04-30 15:56:32)

Ok, i am confused…

If CdA is the Cd(coefficient of drag) x the surface area, how is the Z32 better than the Z31. Not only is its Cd higher than the Z31, but have you seen the front of that thing…its has to be bigger than the Z31. Where do they take their measurements. And on top of that the S13 does really well, and those cars are VERY similar size wise to the Z31.

sprtcrazy17: (2010-04-30 16:16:08)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

I take that as a no. I thought so

Careless: (2010-04-30 16:23:05)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

With all due respect, if you are saying that I stated that horsepower = speed, then you didn't read my post correctly and I think you should look it over again… There are many other factors/formulas in which you can use Cd.

your tank vs. z31 post has absolutely nothing to do with what I was saying. Please re-read what I said carefully before assuming things about weight and power.

If you think what I said is flawed, please tell me in reference to my own post how it is flawed, not in reference to something I did not mention. But before you do, ask yourself something… If using frontal area and Cd is NOT used to best calculate the amount of resistance an object has to overcome in order to accelerate to a certain speed in a certain amount of time moving FORWARD, then why not use the side area, or the rear area? The boundary layer needs to stick to these parts as long as possible as well, as it grossly affects the drag on a vehicle… and last I remember, acceleration tests are done moving forward in a straight line.

So again… what does frontal area have to do with the overall stability of the car at speed when there is much more to something than it's frontal size? What if the side of the car had big bulging air vents; like porsche, or ferrari uses? Does that get factored into the frontal area? because if the car gets larger as it gets longer, then where does the "front" end?

Again, frontal area x cd is better used to calculate an objects relative resistance to acceleration in comparison to objects with a smaller frontal area with a close cd. It's NOT used to calculate stability at speed.

I think StreetFighter's point here is that at speed, the z31 is pretty damn good at staying planted. If he were going 200mph in a Z31 that has been fabricated to be twice the size… It's going to be just as stable. Why? Because Cd is constant, and provided all else is doubled up to exacting specifications, it's going to remain just as stable at double size as it is at 1:1 size due to the coefficient of drag being the same, provided everything else is doubled up.

Robyr: (2010-04-30 18:25:11)

Careless nailed it. And as SOON as Streetfighter posted anything is when this topic should have been over with. His Z31 has very few aero-modifications, and I believe the vents he has are to cycle heat out. The man goes faster than EITHER of the bench racers in this thread (you know who you are) will ever see in their lifetimes outside of an aircraft.

/thread for Careless and Streetfighter.

Here are a few more detailed pics of the 280zx vent installed and the vents I started making in my fenders this weekend.

New 2 Z: (2010-05-06 00:11:19)

forgive me for my ignorance but whats the point of the fender vent?

TurboDreams: (2010-05-06 00:22:35)

Evacuate air from the fender? (in theory at least)

Robyr: (2010-05-06 00:24:32)

Pull/evacuate air from the fender. The constant pull of air will also cool the front vented rotors pretty well. Excellent work, KhyronZ. I love how you have no qualms about cutting up and welding your car. Mad props.

khyronzx: (2010-05-06 17:09:20)

Thanks, thats what intended them for(air extraction from the fenders). Can't decide if I want to put in the other 280zx vent on the other side or not, what do you all think? Gonna do a big drop vent in the middle of the hood whenever I get an E-fan setup.

TurboDreams: (2010-05-06 18:41:51)

If you bothered with one side I'd do the other just to keep things even.

Robyr: (2010-05-06 18:57:00)

Personally I think the asymmetrical 280ZXT vent, with symmetrical fender vents would be the shit. I don't think another drop vent would look good at all though. There's doing it right, then there is over doing it.

khyronzx: (2010-05-06 19:50:54)

If I put the other 280zx vent in I think I'm going to go ahead and do the center drop vent for the radiator. It'll be kinda along the lines of this

Robyr: (2010-05-06 20:11:09)

Yeah, I love SKOLJACK's proudear. If you pull it off it will be tits on wheels.

I don't care if it's carbon fiber or fiber glass, just want one without paying crazy shipping from Japan......

I want the vent on the kouki bonnet for my zenki. I don't like the narrow vent on the zenki bonnet, nor do I like the vents above the strut towers.

If the kouki bonnet was replicated with headlight cutouts to suit both zenki and kouki (not at the same time obviously), I'd be interested in one.

The regular non-vented kouki CF bonnet is sold everywhere, decent price too. However, MSA seem to have their own secret source of acquiring the CF bonnet, since they are the only one to offer non-vented zenki CF bonnet. I wonder if that same source is able to offer one with the vented design......

guess what? it was made back in the 80's it's a mid 80's piece of shit, back when wind tunnels were JUST coming into the scene. the wind tunnels now are A LOT more efficient then back then.

the engineers today are a lot better then the engineers then.

you are a complete moron and no nothing about the auto industry, wind tunnels were first inducted in the late 50's as an accurate measure of wind resitance, which opened auto makers eyes to the fact that round and smooth is not aero dynamic, sharp, straight edges are the least wind resistant, a round car creates back draft, your a complete idiot

actually wind tunnels have been around since the late 1800's. The wright brothers used one for there plane. hell the Germans during the end of WW2 had one that was capable of producing wind speeds in excess of mach 4!!

Put some paint on my fenders.

Careless: (2010-07-15 07:18:25)

any reason why you didn't center the vents on the fender rather than have them closer to the outer edge?

khyronzx: (2010-07-16 03:22:45)

Unibody underneath it.

Careless: (2010-07-16 06:11:48)

-( cant say i like the application.

i mean it looks really well done and clean… but i would have just made them really thin to accomodate the design of the unibody underneath.

nice work though. looks pro.

khyronzx: (2010-07-16 07:48:23)

I hear what you're saying, if I made them thinner on the outside and centered it they would only be like 1 cm wide and it would have just looked foolish. It doesn't look as weird with them being off center in person.

can anyone send me pic's and explain how i need to fit the 280zx air vent into the hood of a 300zx turbo 1988 model

i saw pictures of it but i need to know of reinforcement of the hood , how to cut and install it properly

thanks,

khyronzx: (2011-08-21 06:39:58)

Take a look at my pictures on the previous page of this thread. I cut the mounting part out of the 280zx hood, trimmed it about a centimeter out from the lip the vent sits in and cut a hole in my hood slightly smaller than the part from the 280. I then welded the 280 piece to my hood and used a little filler to blend it in after grinding. After it was welded in, I test fit the vent while slowly removing the least amount of the bracing i could. I still need to go in and cut some more pieces and reinforce/box in the reinforcement where I cut it.

Some other people just cut a hole in their hood and bond the vent directly to it and mold it in. This didn't seem like a great option to me as I've seen this method used on other vehicles/vents and they all eventually cracked somewhere due to the flexing nature of the a hood and dissimilar materials. Using this method on any other panel would probably be ok though.

So where could I get my hands on one of the hoods mentioned on page 4? (the one on the white Z would be incredible)

Proudear will be your best bet. They make the reverse cowl in both CF and FPR

Built a Street fighter drop Vent

Each louvre is 100mm long with 20mm between louvers. If anybody is interested i can provide more measurements.

[archived image: james-drop-vent_zpsjofhgtvi.jpg]

I also have a template for Aerocatch's in the approximated location of streetfighters bonnet pins

adamvann3: (2015-08-19 15:16:58)

James,

Looks good

Did you leave 20mm of matial (flat spot on the louvers)?

I have a spare hood for my 86 that I was thinking about getting creative with.

james: (2015-08-19 19:25:12)

Yup each louvre has 20mm on it so rather than cutting all the way through you can cut 3 sides then just fold it down
