This is the thread where we post pics of clean 1st-gens. Mainly, cause most people don't know how to make them look good, or laziness. Also for kouki-swap hate, and depression from being lead astray and performing a kouki swap on our cars.

What is this kit? It looks great!

I wish this car was a lighter color so I could see what's going on here.

Shaving the front plate mount is KEY. How come NOBODY here has this kit on their car? It would look even better if you cut all the bars out of the opening.

Zenki > Kouki all day every day

I agree, the fenders are what really make me consider getting rid of my 85 turbo, I like the tail lights and there are plenty of things that can happen with the front bumper. However, I really don't like how the fenders look on the car at all. So much so that I might just almost put zenki in last place after kouki.

Butter: (2013-02-12 01:17:15)

Somebody should make this.

This pic alone makes me want to CRY.

Should I find a zenki at the yard, I just might.

Super bored with my car.

Z-31Turbo: (2013-02-12 04:12:35)

Zenki all the way!

Shaving the front plate holder off is just the right way to go, guess I should give it a try.

adamvann3: (2013-02-12 05:11:37)

I have been digging the zenki fronts lately too.... Even stock with a turbo lip (at the correct height) look pretty good.

That's the Style Auto body kit. There's a member on one of these forums that has it and has close up pictures.

Kouki + TBO lip > All

This is not bad either.

260zturbo: (2013-02-12 11:34:50)

I cut the front plate out of the AE. Still rocking the front end. Been wanting to change the bottom end though instead of the turbo lip. I like them but almost needs a little more lip.

Same kit as FlyingT with low and wheels.

MADMIKE: (2013-02-12 17:18:06)

I really want to hate that car, but I can't

Butter: (2013-02-12 18:49:53)

There's a lot I don't like about the CAR as well. But it's a nice kit with some work.

I would just chop off that whole piece of the side skirt with the vent. Don't screw the kit to the car. Ditch the wing. Low, and wheels with some poke would really tie the room together.

MADMIKE: (2013-02-12 20:11:06)

Flares have potential… just needs different wheels and suspension and an axe to the spoiler

designate72: (2013-02-21 03:47:53)

The one thing I've always disliked about the Zenki 84-85s is the flares, but the above images is helping immensely to convince me that they aren't always a bad thing.

[archived image: crab-front.jpg]

This image of Crab's car always motivates me as well, even though the front is converted to Kouki the flares are modified Zenki. But the Zenki flares do seem to need at least a little work to look good.

[archived image: 7299682484_595fcaf772_c.jpg]

Now that is a Zenki with good bodywork. However, I don't know that the front end swap was totally necessary, that car would have looked good with the Zenki front. The late model side skirts do work well with the flares, though.

adamvann3: (2013-02-21 03:52:55)

I love the Zenki flares. I think it adds a lot of character to the car and gives it a classic look.

Granted the kouki widebody reaps benefits stuffing huge wheel sizes under them. Just depends on what your going for. I like them all.

Greasedmonkey: (2013-02-21 07:01:59)

I saw the feature on that car. Very clean car.

FlyingT: (2013-02-21 14:43:20)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Oh, so a nearly completely stock looking 84 Z31 2+2 that looks like it might have been a NA (chrome trim, missing turbo badge on the hatch) or turbo (front lip, trubo auto cooler hole, and spoiler) with aftermarket wheels has achieved a nice clean subtle look. Looks like Nissan hit a home run when it designed it stock since the only non-OEM part that you can see on the car is the wheels.

It is a nice clean looking Z31 though.

Kimbro Slice: (2013-02-21 15:19:35)

Yeah, I thought about a kouki swap before…

But everyone does that. And I do think the zenki/chuki has grown on me a hell of a lot more than the kouki ever will.

Just my opinion, carry on

Butter: (2013-02-22 14:28:42)

I think where they went wrong was one hood vent too many, and the Z32 markers. That crap didn't even belong on a Z32.

The box flares would really pop with some less lame wheels in there.

Is that a kouki hood btw?

MADMIKE: (2013-02-22 14:43:20)

Thought the blue Z was a photoshop.

Ven: (2013-02-22 14:52:09)

I like the hood but they probably could've done w/o the front most pair as you said. I also like how they spliced an R32 GT-R bumper with the Z31 one, then went with z32 markers. It being a slick top, blue, and the rb26 helps too lol.

MADMIKE: (2013-02-22 21:26:18)

Come on bum you don't like the civic contact patch?

Quickshift: (2013-02-23 12:11:26)

I've thought about molding one of these fancy "rocket bunny" bumpers for an s13 to a z31. biggest problem is acquiring the kit, and then having the balls to cut into it.

Your Z is beautiful! Just great

This is why 86's are the best. Those taillights are done perfectly! I like how you opened them up and put clear diffuser patterns in the housings. Well done.

Also, I am not a big fan of tinted tailights, but the way you did it (tinted clear coat) is very nice as well. I can appreciate them when I know they were done properly, unlike that shitty spray tint!

It might look nice from 5 ft when new, but give it a couple weeks of washing, UV rays, and then see how appealing that nice purple-swirl taillight look is!

you asked what we think. that's what i think. get a matching fender first.

the design/look of the diffuser doesn't match anything on the z31 anyways. so it would also look less than appealing.

Ven: (2013-03-02 21:52:38)

On a side note, did you paint the car "freshly" under your ownership or was it that way before you got it? If it was under your ownership, I'd like to understand why time wasn't taken to throw on a cheap fender (I've bought one for $40) and then paint the whole car ?

how easy is it to convert a kouki (8 into a zenki style body (pre-86).

my 88 is round, and i'm liking some of the front bumpers I'm seeing here but I also have some wiiiiiide fender flares that I can't fit on the kouki arches.

then I guess the challenge would be headlights and hood, right?

Ven: (2013-03-14 00:35:27)

All you need to swap front ends are hood, headlights, and bumper. Fenders don't matter. Both front ends have been installed and sold on both types of fenders (non flared and flared).

Careless: (2013-03-14 00:43:18)

but i want the 85 style fenders. they allow more room to attach fender flares to. in the rear it doesn't matter as much, but in the front, the feder arch on the kouki goes too high up to get the proper fastening that i desire.

Been thinking of a vent on the front bumper to bring some cold air in for the intake.

Been looking on ebay last night, and I've found the trans am 87 vent are pretty much what I'm looking for.

What do you guys think? Way better looking than most of the aftermarket vent I've seen & available for cheap.

I would put only one and the 'driver side' of the bumper.

That with a shaved license plate would make my kouki look good, thought?

Careless: (2013-03-14 17:10:51)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

don't do it. although the vents are nice, any holes on the z31 front bumper (especially between the headlights) looks ridiculous, out of place, and tacky. I would get a spare hood and make a drop vent. That would get more air to flow through the entire front bumper and cool the car much better as well as look proper if you place and design it well. I'm only saying this because I'm pretty sure you have the skill to do it without screwing it up or making it ugly :-) But don't cut the bumper please.

Where's a good place to put the front plate when you shave the bumper? I am thinking bottom off to the side somewhere. It just seems silly to put it back in the same spot afterward. Anyone have opinions on this?

Also is the front plate mount a solid block or do you have to fill up a giant hole afterward?

I don't like the Zenki front bumper unless it has louvered headlights, or at least the plastic headlight covers. Maybe I'm just biased because my first car was a Kouki. Still, the smoked Zenki tails are hawt. I'm beginning to agree with what nearly everyone says… Best look is an '86T with the kouki front end and an SS lip. Wet dream material from every angle. Not that I don't like the Zenki, obviously, as that is what I own, lol!

Pace: (2013-04-08 02:33:09)

Originally, I didn't care for the Zenki bumper. There are still some angles that look funny, but overall it's grown on me. On mine… I feel the fog lights help to balance out the front. At least helps with the upper bumper overhang. If only they weren't so finicky.

Butter: (2013-04-09 02:47:46)

That car might have looked awesome with MC Hammer blasting out of the speakers, but it just looks so ungainly nowadays. It's very cluttered-looking. Also, those clear plastic headlight things look just like what they are, cheap plastic panels from Home Depot.....IMHO. Throw them on the pile with your rear window louvers to be blown up.

As for the driving. This guy actually seems pretty good. I'm guessing the car is open-diffed, with a boost-up, probably 250hp. It's hard as hell to slide, and he makes up for it with speed and balls. You can hear the chirp as he prematurely regains traction, despite still at WOT. He could have kept it going with clutch kicking, but it probably wasn't invented yet! This is actually a pretty famous video in the drifting community as it's one of the oldest known films. My friends and I all laugh at it, while at the same time wondering who the hell this guy was (or became).

adamvann3: (2013-07-19 15:17:03)

Both designs have their own uniqueness about them. The Kouki is curvy, has wide hips, refined feel and can be pulled towards a more updated aftermarket (ie big wheels/low profile tires, front lip ect…). Zenkis have sharp lines, boxiness, and very nostalgic feel and to me look best when keeping towards that 80s early 90s theme similar to what the AE86 provides. Looks best when keeping to era specific look (refined 15-16 wheels, with little bit of meat on the tires ect…)

Now I have seen fine examples of both, even modified outside of those specifications… but the devil is always in the details. Shaved front bumper, JDS wheels… no one can argue that isnt a good looking zenki.

Those are the best stock wheels LOL (the German ones). The sideskirt is goes perfectly with the lip and I like how it goes up the side of the car. The car is lowered and that's it.

Lets not even start on the fog lights and front fascia. HAHA

Pace: (2013-07-20 01:16:59)

JDS wheels look out of place on a Kouki, IMO. The spokes are sharply cut and angled, much like the body lines of a Zenki.

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Kinda pointless to repeatedly claim that a Kouki is the best looking Z31 in a Zenki thread, don't you think?

I thought some of the Germany Z31s were sold with them? Aren't they known as JDS OEM wheels?

Careless: (2013-07-20 02:07:23)

You just thought that up? lol.

They are OEM wheels recreated by Japan Datsun Service.

Someone posted here that they were once OEM wheels that were widened at one point.

Then they were recreated completely.

You can have almost any wheel widened if you go to the proper place. There is someone in Ontario who does it.

inqui-Z-tor: (2013-07-26 04:22:57)

I'm liking the inner louvers look also. The only application I've seen on a z31 is in a Japanese Z sales brochure. Until then, I didn't know they even made those. None of the USA sales brochures showed them. They remind me of Venetian Blinds .. I recall interior blinds fitted to station wagons and passenger vans in the 60s/70s …

The only thing I'd be wary of is the noise they'd make (rattles) just from the road traveling …

Then again, paper or plastic blinds "today" would cut down on the "noise" … .?

For shaving the front plate bump, how should you fill in the hole? I have never done body work before.. any guides for a nub?

Careless: (2013-07-26 17:52:28)

bond some styrene or resin-safe plastic to the inside of the bumper and then lay some nicely cut pieces of fiberglass edge to edge in the hole. then body filler + glazing putty. shouldn't take more than 3-4 hours from start to paint-ready product (drying time not included).

then you can get a kouki plate holder and try and make use of it for legal reasons if need be.

actually. if you could cleanly cut the hole and then bond the plastic on the inside and cut a thin piece to go on the front where the hole is… if there's some product like a panel bond that you can smear over the edges where they meet that is more resilient and can flex in different weather conditions (maybe panel bond does this well?) then you can skip the fibreglassing and just panel bond it in.

styrene can be found a model car shops in different thicknesses. you should be able to find one that is the same thickness or close to the stock Z bumper thickness.

adamvann3: (2013-07-26 18:19:21)

Its the complexity of the OEM facia being urethane and filling in the plate area/bonding. Careless addresses it with weather concern, or even if the front facia flexes it will crack or break out.

Proudear makes and FRP replacement with shaved plate.

So does it look terrible on an AE too? A chuki is basically the same thing.

Tomakze: (2013-07-31 05:06:17)

Yeah, I'm lost on why a scoop would look bad on an '86. The car is more similar to a Zenki than a Kouki. The average joe can't even tell the difference at first glance.

Actually, if I end up doing a kouki front end swap, I plan to integrate a scoop somehow. Either a Zenki scoop, a generic one, or I make one. I

Kimbro Slice: (2013-07-31 05:26:48)

I like the scoop on my AE. Just something about it looks good in my eyes.

slammedcoupe: (2013-07-31 14:56:46)

ae it works in my opinion as the rear arches are "bolt on"

the 86 has widened rear arches with sheet metal does it not?

personally I don't like the pre/86 cars

id rather have a 240/260z or an s30

jaqattack02: (2013-07-31 15:14:47)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

They are, but the rear of the 86 is shaped exactly the same as the AE. There just isn't a seam there for the attached flares. Front fenders are exactly the same.

G-E: (2013-07-31 18:49:18)

The 200zr-II scoop on the kouki looks good because it matches the body style, as the 84 turbo scoop on zenki/chuki matches the angularity

slammedcoupe: (2013-07-31 23:45:40)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

while they may be the "same" to you, they are definatly not the same to me.

if the AE flares were molded that may be a different story, but they totally change the look of the car from the formed metal widebody of the 86.

anyways that's just my opinion, im quite partial to the clean/sleek look that the 86 has compared to the previous years.

it doesn't really matter much anyways, im planning a kouki front swap to tie into my build

Ven: (2013-07-31 23:54:29)

86+ flares are the best of all. AE fender flares just look like aftermarket tacked on pieces.

I love the Zenki StyleAuto kit. I was planning on getting the mk1 MR2 kit before I got my Z. They used the same design for the rear bumper on both kits lol. I've never seen a 2+2 look so good. Proud to own such a looker. [archived image: biggrin.png]

FlyingT: (2013-09-12 20:03:37)

Overbite, what overbite? Depends on the air dam used, and most of the Kouki's in their own thread have an aftermarket air dam.

I like the way the Zenki front bumper kind of continues the body like curve. The Kouki front bumper looks likes like a blunt end.

The perfect Z31, Kouki front end (because I like the smaller headlights and separate driving lamps) on an 86T body because I like the 84-86 rear ends better with the wide body fenders. If you are a 240Z purists, the Zenki and Chouki rear end is old school, like the 240Z. The 87 Kouki rear end was the first Z car without separate tail lights with the license plate in between. Putting the plate on the bumper on the Kouki looks crappy with the BIG bumperettes.

[archived image: DSCF0096.jpg]

Ven: (2013-09-12 21:40:04)

The overbite is obvious.

[archived image: wheel-show-1.jpg]

The top/middle of the bumper sticks out far beyond the bottom part. It's as if someone removed a person's bottom lip. It really does need an air/dam to correct. (The stock zenki turbo lip does little to correct this).

Koukis even w/o a lip have far less overbite.

michaelp: (2013-09-12 21:45:35)

I like the stock turbo lip though.

Pace: (2013-09-12 22:45:38)

Several other sports cars in the early-mid 80s had that same bumper "overhang"; Starion/Conquest specifically come to mind. It was part of the styling of that day.

Hmmm .. having difficulty in responding ..

Mike .. I did vote for your entry.

I was pointing out that .. your PS'd modification would be just as (if not more) acceptable as an entry for the calendar. It wouldn't be the 1st entry with a PS'd car to be selected for the calendar. (Remember without PS limits .. the car you see, may only exist in the submitters imagination.)

Ven: (2013-11-20 22:47:34)

Throw on that airdam and maybe some white mesh wheels w/ polished lip then we're talking about an ultra badass zenki.

michaelp: (2014-03-01 15:40:59)

Another idea I've had running through my head.

TBO lip extended height, modified to fit a Zenki/Chuki

floridaZ: (2014-03-02 02:28:43)

Me thinks it would be easier to start with an 87 bumper to achieve that look.

I don't like the 87s catfish-looking headlights and rounded-off-ness

Ven: (2014-03-02 17:20:13)

I think the single lense looks cleaner. It's why I wanted the zenki euro headlights.

I actually test-fitted this. There is a bit of a gap and nothing for it to hang to. You could probably make it work and it would look sweet. Zenki just needs a chin-job.

What kit is that Brian? Dat front air dam…

Butter: (2014-05-05 16:02:57)

Looks like the dual fog Kaminari.

Ven: (2014-05-05 21:15:00)

That brown one is really nice. Wonder what fenders those are. And I love the duck lip spoiler.

1sikz: (2014-05-06 15:19:36)

Probably custom made fenders…

I want the air dam thats on the blueish silver car.

I just ordered that front and the matching rear for my 86T, CANT WAIT

Pace: (2014-10-30 18:14:02)

While we're on the topic of Kaminari valences… Does anyone have info on the "single louver" version posted earlier? The only info I can find is from old translated JDS catalog sites and ZZZing referring to it as the "Aero" model (obviously outdated name by now). I'm hoping it hasn't been superceded by another.

Example:

OR…

Does anyone have any pics of the Kaminari K030220 valence (similar to Quiz's) on an 86? I can only seem to find pics of the narrow fender version on 84-85s.

And to stay on topic… Someone added some custom flares.

god damn. Love the front fitment, rear I'm not so sure. I have always been a sucker for the white/red too.

I had some fitment issues during the installation due to the this air dam being meant for '84-'85 fenders. It was worth all the extra work, I am pleased with how it came out. I think it fits the car well.

Pace: (2014-12-20 03:44:15)

Missed the update.

{{#if:nater86zx|nater86zx wrote:|Quote:}}

Isn't that one of the Xenon models?

I'm more or less looking for more pics of this (preferably at a better front angle and unbroken). Kaminari non-louvered front for '86 models.

Edit: Looking at it again, the way the side of the front cover flares upward seems off. Maybe it's not the Kaminari I'm looking for… No Star Wars-related puns, please.

In a perfect world, I would love to have the bumper from this car [not to mention the whole car in its entirety], but I'm quite certain it's a one-off piece. I like how the center opening is a bit wider and the fog lights line up with the turn signals.

And to keep this thread on track, here's a clean example with the louvered Kaminari bumper.

Raven: (2015-03-21 01:26:35)

I have this feeling that its a reworked Avante Auto kit. Spoiler is obviously Avante, the rear flares appear to be as well. I'm guessing they chopped the OEM zenki and grafted the Avante front on to it along with some reworking to retain the black bar. I could be wrong though, all I know for sure is that I want it. It and its spoiler.

Pace: (2015-03-21 12:55:32)

While perusing the Yahoo Japan Auctions last week, I found listings for the front bumper and spoiler. They are made-to-order by an individual (or shop) in Japan.

Raven: (2015-03-21 15:50:44)

Nice find Pace. Also just as an FYI My comment about the Avante kit was in regards to the blue Three-piece Z.

Another winning combo. Shaved bumper, Kaminari louvered air dam, and JDS wheels.

Ignore the clean kouki.
