a Friend. Of mine did this to my car… very big improvement… runs better.. then my old cam senser rsb-03.
he said senser it is from. a 98 quest or a maxi.ma vg30 i forget. very good upgrade.
michaelp: (2013-01-20 12:18:33)
The Crank/Cam sensor is the same in design/operation from 82-98ish. If your car runs better, its because your crank angle sensor was going bad…which wouldn't be a huge surprise as they are getting old. Newer parts are almost always likely to last longer and perform better.
gardner86zx: (2013-01-20 14:06:30)
Going to go with mike on this one. I have a 97 villiger distributor and cas in my z. It runs the same as it did with the original one. Yours was probably going bad
tatsu: (2013-01-20 16:24:21)
I went from the rsb 06 to rsb 07, and noticed a big change, but I also did the PRW-2 swap at the same time
easarcher: (2013-01-20 17:27:44)
I changed mine to the RSB-07 as well, it made an improvement. I changed from a known good part to a newer one from a junkyard car, and my idle got smoother. No difference in power, but i think the newer technology just makes it respond faster like the prw-2.
Hairyballs: (2013-01-20 19:30:55)
my cam senser… had original senser… and had 370,000 miles. nothing wrong… just change it because he said… my car… would… run bitter. and it did.
michaelp: (2013-01-20 20:23:30)
I will experiment with it this month on my 87 beater/track slut, but I have my doubts. Z31 crank angle sensors go bad from time to time....the car can still run, it'll just have random misfires, occasional hard starts etc…just because your car ran doesn't mean there was "nothing wrong". My 87 is running a Z31 Crank Angle Sensor and runs perfectly smooth with the PRW-2, which is why I have doubts. But I'll give anything a shot and will share info I come up with, because in reality all it is is the crank angle and cylinder identification for the ECU, the ECU is what determines injector timing/pulsewidth and ignition timing.
This is the wrong section anyways, because you're providing no info on doing the swap. As I said, I'll experiment, if I determine (using a scope, data logging on the ECU, driveability etc) its an upgrade IMO, I'll gladly do a proper writeup on here. [archived image: smile.png]
Thanks for the suggestion though.
Careless: (2013-01-20 20:29:08)
I have no doubts that newer parts that work on older ignition components may improve throttle response and idle stability somewhat.
It won't be a huge difference- that's almost guaranteed, but every small improvement that is a simple part swap is worth trying rather than assuming.
If it were not for that mentality, then the PRW-2 upgrade would not be worth the 5 minutes it takes to install. But it very much is worth it.
michaelp: (2013-01-20 20:38:54)
Yeah, I'm giving it a chance because newer parts are definitely always better. I'd like to see what I come up with, then do a proper writeup on swapping over.
tatsu: (2013-01-20 23:53:44)
the RSB 06, and RSB 07, when taken apart and measured for resistance, they are different, not sure how much different, but they are. my car is starting to have a hard start issue for some reason, so I think I will throw in my back up CAS and see if that fixes it
michaelp: (2013-01-21 00:05:11)
All aftermarket replacement CAS' for 82-98 are exactly the same part. The resistance should be the same when in good condition I believe....have you checked FSMs for both to confirm? I'll look for the 98 Quest FSM…
tatsu: (2013-01-21 00:07:36)
I have not, I just know the resistances are different
michaelp: (2013-01-21 00:11:34)
All either of them say is continuity should exist....and since its just outputting a digital signal, resistance really wouldn't be an issue so long as continuity exists between the test points.
Hairyballs: (2013-02-21 21:32:30)
we. try'd cam senser on another friend z31. smoother idle an no dead spot in rpm. he say.
TurboZcaR: (2013-02-21 21:42:43)
Did you ever figure this out michaelp?
jaqattack02: (2013-02-27 01:43:28)
If the part is exactly the same, why would it have a different part number?
Hairyballs: (2013-02-28 17:21:56)
from. what. this guy do to my. z. it bolt up. no wire. bolt up.
they are part. # because. it better. i crack 2 open on. old senser and new. they are. not the same.
Careless: (2013-02-28 19:44:57)
cool. story. bro.
jaqattack02: (2013-03-01 18:33:31)
Wait… was that even in English?
MADMIKE: (2013-03-01 19:10:52)
Maybe not, no location....
Careless: (2013-04-06 15:20:35)
so what car does the RSB-07 come from? I would like to give it a fair trial considering the PRW ignitors is da bizznazz for our ignition systems, RSB-07 couldn't hurt.
tnokes9: (2013-04-12 18:56:15)
So they're saying that you can take your existing CAS out of the "dizzy" and install this one or do you have to change the dizzy and all?
Careless, in the opening thread, he says it came from a 98 Quest or Maxima, "he forgets"....nevemind.
Hairyballs: (2013-04-15 20:52:01)
from what. i knowing. 1990 vg30e maxima, to 1998 nissan. quest. anything that vg30e prw-2.
i am. sorry my english is no good. I move from cuba and trying to learn. language. i spell good but . need help on my sentance structre.
I am in west kendell florida
Careless: (2013-04-16 00:01:27)
ok, so any car that has a PRW-2 ignitor will have the RSB-07. I am going to look for one.
TurboZcaR: (2013-04-16 18:52:15)
Very interested to know if and how well this works. Anything to make the car run better Im up to do.
jaqattack02: (2013-04-18 17:02:01)
Grabbed a distributor from a Maxima last time I was at the junkyard. While I was working on my car last night my brother pulled the CAS out of it and confirmed it was the RSB-07 model. He installed it in a Z31 distributor we had lying around which the CAS had gone out in. After install we hooked up the wire on my car and spun it and it fired the injectors, so we can confirm that it does work. Haven't tried running a car off it yet to see if there is any improvement.
Careless: (2013-04-18 17:08:48)
woah. maxima dist has RSB-07? the dreaded maxima dizzy I had in my car that made it run like shit for two years has been in my "red-flag" reference bin of "keep, but never use" parts. maybe I'll pillage it's innards.
jaqattack02: (2013-04-18 17:17:00)
Yeah, I grabbed the distributor, the PRW-2 and the efans from it. It was one of the one's with the funny dual runner intakes on it.
Careless: (2013-04-18 18:04:50)
OK riddle me this.
I just found out that I do indeed have an RSB-07 in the maxima distributor.
I also broke a set of plier tips, and the claw off of a hammer trying to pry the last part that holds the cas in. this was a rebuilt dizzy, and it looked like it was pressed on. the bearing underneath is definitely new. Is this part supposed to be this hard to remove? how do you guys remove it without damaging it? I was going to apply heat, but being so close to the sensor… I wasn't cool wid'dat.
glad I got the RSB-07 out of it though. one less trip to the JY, can't imagine having to pull that shit out of a distributor at the JY to shove it in my pants.
jaqattack02: (2013-04-18 18:26:21)
Kevin will have to answer that. I'm not sure what he did to get it apart.
Axel kain: (2013-04-19 00:18:19)
what is the issue?
tear down:
remove cap, and rotor. remove 2 small phillips screws to cover plate, remove cover plate. hold drive gear ( I used a rag and held it by hand) to remove the (Phillips in max, flat blade in Z31) center screw inside the cylinder the rotor attaches to. that will remove the center cylinder. the pickup plate should now be able to be lifted off, as well as the plate below, and wave washer. next remove the small screw underneath that holds the harness to the body of the dist. then just pull directly out on the harness plug where it goes into the dist/CAS. now remove the 3 screws holding the CAS, and remove.
only notable difference is the 2 dowels on the bottom of the RSB-07, just snip them off carefully. then drop it in using Z31 screws, and reverse your removal. as far as I could tell both pickup plates were the exact same. also remember to use the Z31 harness, plugs right in.
… next one I do I'll take pics.
Careless: (2013-04-19 00:37:58)
ok, so then it wasn't just me.
there is the upper collar that the rotor fastens to.
then there is the small locating washer (with the 2 upward, and 1 downward tabs).
then there is the small wave washer.
then there is the degree wheel.
then there is the lower collar that is the last piece before the sensor itself.
i literally had to fight the lower collar off, breaking a claw from a hammer and a tip off of some pliers.
it looks as though there was a gouge on the shaft that it was pressed onto.
you're saying it comes off easy, so it must have been installed incorrectly from the rebuilder i bought it from.
if it was easy to take off, i wouldn't have broke tools doing it. lol
either way, i got the sensor out. hopefully i can put it in the other distributor without breaking shit.
Axel kain: (2013-04-19 04:14:02)
well from what I remember, the Maxima dist.'s lower collar did fight me coming off, just kept prying up on it, and wiggling it back and forth while pulling with pliers. may have been easier in a vice. but for some reason, the Z31's just slid right out!
G-E: (2013-04-19 06:07:55)
I just pulled an rsb-07 out of a quest or pathfinder dist I had leftover, everything came apart very easily
Careless: (2013-04-19 09:23:04)
ok cool. i'll change the one on the z31 today. i didn't wanna go through that again. then i'd have no lower collars to put back on. and the maxima one is not centered the same as the z31 is either, sooooo
Careless: (2013-04-23 18:28:23)
you guys are lyin to me… LYIN!
I just had RedDemon over my house, and I swear we're not handicapped. We had two distributors on the ground. One that I had to beat to shit to take the stupid collar out of, and the one I took out of my Z31 VG33 because I wanted to put the RSB-07 into that one. The collar DOES NOT come out by hand. It is pressed onto the fricken distributor shaft. It is the last piece before the sensor, and it has a thick metal pad with one hole on the metal pad, and the shaft in the middle. I think the later model distributors (21P01) were pressed on, because there is no way that center collar would stay where it is without something holding it there. It is not D-shaped or keyed.
This thing doesn't come apart "by hand". I think there is a part number difference here.
see this part here, in the center. the shaft is in the middle of it. this one is from an R31 skyline. it has no hole on the thick metal pad to align the upper rotor collar like mine does. is this how the one you guys are changing looks?
if so, that would mean that all later style ones are different.
michaelp: (2013-04-23 20:17:55)
I find it hard to believe that '95 Distributors come apart the same way as '84 distributors but 88-89 Z31 distributors don't…oh, and the '91 M30 distributor is 21P01…and it comes apart exactly like the 84 Z31 dizzy. I have both, they all come apart the same. You're doing something wrong.
Careless: (2013-04-23 20:26:34)
I don't want to force anything because its my only working diz at this point- but wiggling the collar and pulling and prying on it did nothing. Confirmed by RedDemon when he was here.
michaelp: (2013-04-23 20:33:34)
1. Remove 2 screws to remove cover.
2. Remove the center screw that holds the rotor drive on.
3. Gently remove the disc from the CAS.
4. At this point, the collar/disc drive is just slid onto the shaft. Just wiggle/pull to remove it. Might be difficult after years of being on there.
(Ignore the clippy, its not from the dizzy)
5. Finally, remove the 3 screws retaining the CAS..
michaelp: (2013-04-23 20:34:05)
Careless: (2013-04-23 20:36:17)
image #4
once removing the metal tabbed washer, the collar underneath does not come out.
i really don't want to go to the garage to remove the diz again and take pictures of the one i had to give a beating to.
you cant really see anything in the pics anyway. yours slides off. both of mine do not.
so I dunno what to do at this point. (and i stripped the screw on the distributor base plate, so i'll have to retap that later).
Tomakze: (2013-04-23 20:57:35)
I'm not sure if I missed it, but did anyone notice a difference? What is the advantage of using this part over factory?
michaelp: (2013-04-23 21:00:23)
Going from a good Z31 CAS to one of these....I noticed nothing. -.-
Tomakze: (2013-04-23 21:03:14)
I'm not too surprised. So I guess the main advantage of this part is being able to find it easily in the junkyard. That's still cool!
michaelp: (2013-04-23 21:07:37)
Yeah, I do have 5 Z31 dizzys with CAS' that are showing signs of going bad though…so I'm on the lookout for these to fix those distributors. lol
G-E: (2013-04-23 21:08:27)
Careless: (2013-04-23 21:13:42)
see, immediately i notice one thing that is different with yours.
the lower collar doesn't have a hole like the one in image4 posted by mike.
so there seems to be some things we dont know about the differences between distributors.
michaelp: (2013-04-23 21:14:32)
Thats also clearly not a Z31 distributor....and the pathfinder ones I've taken apart still just pull out....
Careless: (2013-04-23 22:20:33)
calm your fuckin attitude mike. it's not "clearly" anything if someone doesn't know what the non-z31 looks like inside.
G-E: (2013-04-24 00:11:03)
In both the pathy/quest dist and z31 dist I pulled apart, the wave washer was between the tabbed washer and the lower sleeve… and in the off chance I was confused, I double checked the impressions/clean spots left on the mating surfaces…
from the top:
top sleeve with bolt
degree wheel
tabbed washer
wave washer
lower sleeve
michaelp: (2013-04-24 02:20:10)
The outside doesn't even look the same -.-
Careless: (2013-04-24 03:17:17)
you didn't even post pictures of the outside, and i never even took the cap off the broken one you gave me for free.
so like i said, not "clear" if you haven't seen both.
-.-
anyways. i have a spring compressor with adjustable legs that I'm going to use when I get a chance later tonight. i totally forgot that i had it. it should work perfect.
i'll just put a bolt underneath the retainer post and it should press on the shaft rather than the collar.
jaqattack02: (2013-04-29 18:24:02)
Not sure why you had so much trouble with yours. Kevin (Axel Kain) tore down 2 to remove the CAS while we were at the junkyard on Saturday. One piece in particular was hard to get off, but nothing some prying with a screw driver didn't get past. I think he had each one apart in around 5 minutes. Heck, we had more trouble with a rotor being seized on the shaft than anything internal to the distributor.
Careless: (2013-04-29 18:39:17)
i swear, if i was lying RedDemon would have made me look stupid by pulling it off with his hands. he was here and he pulled on it and it didn't go anywhere. we both pried on it too. i'll try at it sometime later.
jaqattack02: (2013-04-29 19:40:52)
Not saying I don't believe you. I'm thinking you just got a bad one that isn't a typical example.
Axel kain: (2013-04-30 03:32:21)
I have noticed that inner-lower collar is tighter on maxima's than Z31's. just dont be afraid to kick it's ass!
Careless: (2013-04-30 03:41:55)
i need to be gentle to this one. it's my good 88T distributor that made my car run nice, so I know it works almost perfect. but I did find a small piece of what seems like a cotton fluff inside the CAS area… so i think that may have attributed to a miss perhaps? We'll see. not a priority right now.
Augustus Maximus: (2014-03-12 05:20:13)
I swapped out an 03 for an 07 just to see the difference and notice none. So if the RSB 03 is functioning properly an RSB 07 wont make a difference.
V8srfun: (2015-05-11 01:05:31)
I just installed a 07 in my car but it had a bad sensor to begin with. The car definitely starts runs and drives better
ozzyrulez: (2015-05-11 01:44:56)
I swapped one into mine today too battling a no sync issue with Megasquirt. Car runs the same really though monitoring trigger logs the signal is a little more stable than the rsb-06 that came out.
