I'm going to replace the timing belt water pump and thermostat and idler Lully , I did he water pump and thermostat already.
Here is my plan, to mark the belt, and the cogs with 3 different colour paint markers. Then remove the old belt and
Replace it with the new one. My only question is the tentioner? I have heard that it's a manual tentioner. I have never worked with one I have always seen the spring and hydrolic type.
So in just wondering how I set it to the right tention.
I have an 1985 Nissan 300zx vg30e non turbo
Any info is always appreciated thank you!

Setting the tensioner and its how to is in the FSM or Haynes.
There are specifics about it that you should read there
You can download the FSM or Haynes from the following link.

You're going to destroy your engine doing some clown ass shit like that.

Xenon links have been dead for some time now. NICO clubs still work but are not a DL'able PDF. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/300zx/
A sticky needs to be updated to something like a user submitted drop box file

Haha thanks for the honesty, that's just what my mechanic told me to do

The timing belt kit should come with instructions, there are YouTube step-by-step videos, and plenty of website writeups
also, find a new mechanic

Just turn the tensioner with the Allen key and when you feel the timing belt tighten up, also tighten the main bolt. Just make sure the t belt has about one cm of play.
Turn over the engine at the crankshaft bolt and make sure everything looks good. Inspect. Make sure the timing belt marks also line up. I'd turn it over a couple times. Make sure the spark plugs are out so compression is atzero.
The tpensioner is pretty simple. If you want be really techy, I'd look at the manual. They give you torque specifications and so on. I'd do that before hand nebertheless. I don't your experience but I'd be more concerned with the belt. Good luck either. Inspect! Lol

Good, and find a new mechanic if he's giving you that kind of advice. The process is very straight forward, just follow the steps in the manual
