Careless: (2011-01-16 12:09:37)

I want to get the Stainless Dual tip because I dont have time to make my own exhaust. I'll do a Vband conversion later by having someone modify the unit later.

As for the Turbo-back CM Exhaust with hi-flo cat…

1) fitment is near perfect, yes?

2) Anyone else install the dual tip and have pics at the rear bumper?

3) Do I need to buy any type of hanger or apparatus that does NOT come with the kit?

4) Are there any things that are required for install (tools not included) that need to be purchase for installation?

5) Some say 3 inch exhausts always smack around over the subframe simply because of room… Does anyone have a remedy for this? Heat wrap the exhaust in that area to provide pliable cushioning?

6) How does the dual sound? Not really a fan of the single tip can. At least not on my car right now.

Reason I ask is because parts chains/stores are closed at 12:00 Noon on Saturdays, and Sundays basically closed. It would suck for me to attempt to install the exhaust and not be able to finish come Monday because stores are closed, and then have to order parts for Tuesday.

Looking to order today. Want to eliminate any clogged cat or exhaust back-up problems before tackling things like removing the turbo altogether.

Kutakino: (2011-01-16 17:40:53)

I can't speak for the dual-tip part of things since I ordered a single-tip 3" turbo-back, but for the rest:

1. Fitment was near perfect. The only thing I didn't entirely like was how close the tip sat to the bumper, it angles up a hair and almost touches it. Everything else bolted up perfectly fine.

3. There was no extra hanger or anything needed to install. I believe I could not get the exhaust close enough to the factory hanger tab that attaches to the body by the subframe, but I have had no rattling issues and the pipes are still rock solid in place. Tabs on the muffler utilize the stock hangers.

4. Nothing should be needed for installation, unless you do not have the nuts/studs for the turbo's o2 housing where the down-pipe bolts on, as they do not provide those with the kit.

5. I haven't had any issues with the pipe smacking the sub-frame. Once I got all of the sections bolted in the piping was pretty stiff in there, and I have yet to see or hear any evidence of it rubbing or hitting the suspension, and I've had it on for…maybe 6 months?

michaelp: (2011-01-16 17:48:42)

Fits fine, all of the hangers lined up for me, but I don't have one of CM's mufflers. Exhaust doesn't hit the subframe…

300zxturboftw: (2011-01-16 19:50:53)

I had the cm dp and HFC with an MSA catback. As stated, no extra hangers needed (you will end up eliminating stock one's you don't need). As for hitting the subframe, it knocks mine sometimes. Very light scratching on the metal from a bolt, but I just need to redrill the mounting hole and put it up another 1/2 inch. I only hear it rattle very softly at Idle. It's all about the install though on how it sits on the subframe.

Things you need:

PB blaster. lots if your exhaust hasn't been off.

I would put a new crush washer in to seal between T3 elbow and downpipe

Other than that nothing else really.

Careless: (2011-01-16 19:58:17)

Thanks for all the replies doods.

Anyone know the part number for the T3 elbow to downpipe crushwasher/gasket?

Chrisw_2003: (2011-01-16 20:56:02)

I want to say its this one http://www.courtesyparts.com/20711-gask … 86388.html

Careless: (2011-01-16 20:57:42)

that's not a part number, chris.

Chrisw_2003: (2011-01-16 21:06:53)

20691-Z31001

Thats not a Nissan OE part number, its courtesy's modified part number. If you call your local Nissan dealer and say 20691-Z31001 they'll call you a moron and hang up the phone, only Courtesy's search system can recognize that, I assume they do it to keep you buying there rather than just using them for PNs.

or you could call nissan and direct them to where the part is? hmmm every time I have called my nissan dealer with a part number from courtesy they were able to find the one I was looking for, sounds like your parts dealer is pretty inept

+1 I quote Courtesy's parts number. They use the same diagrams at the Dealerships if you didn't know. Either the first or last set of numbers is the number the dealership has.

He never said anything about calling and asking for the gasket, so I don't know why you're making up stupid reasons to insult the dealer :-/

He specifically mentioned calling and using the part number, which you seem to have though is a real Nissan part number. Have you ever used Nissan FAST? Try putting the courtesy number into the system.

IT

DOES

NOT

WORK.

Anyways. I asked for the OE Part number.

If no one has it, then I'll look in fast later tonight.

Careless: (2011-01-17 00:48:24)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Further research shows that it's not even for a Turbo car either.

Finding that same gasket in FAST system shows that it's an NA gasket, and furthermore, it's not even available…

20010Z which is suplemented as 20720-N2226 is

SEALANT-JOINT,EXHAUST TUBE

20711 which has no applicable part number is

GASKET-EXHAUST

So it looks like nissan uses exhaust sealant to make the connection to the DP unless there is something different in the Fiche.

Chrisw_2003: (2011-01-17 00:54:30)

sent you a pm

Kutakino: (2011-01-17 02:42:03)

Just in-case it happens to matter, when I took off my factory down-pipe there was no gasket present, and it didn't even look like there was sealant on either side of the connection. All I got with the new exhaust was the big ring with tapered ends that sits between the down-pipe and o2 housing openings, didn't use any gasket or sealant and haven't had any evidence of exhaust leaks.

Careless: (2011-01-17 02:45:46)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

so there is a ring they provide that goes in between?

It just doesn't look like it makes sense in the picture they show.

The stock DP has a bubble-flare type end, and it goes INSIDE the turbo elbow. The CM DP pictured above has a flared-out end… so I don't envision a flared end sealing well against a surface that is tapered inwards or on the flange mating surface itself unless there is a piece provided that goes in between.

I don't know. guess I'll just order it.

Kutakino: (2011-01-17 03:17:55)

Yea, one tapered end of the ring fits snug in the flared-out end of the CM down-pipe, and then the other tapered end of the ring fits snug into the end of the o2 elbow. When you fit the down-pipe, the end of the pipe will not touch the o2 elbow due to the ring, so I assume that tightening the flange thingy to the elbow compresses the pipe against the ring and seals both ends. If you were to use sealant, it would have to go on the outside surface of the taper on the ring, not the pipes.

If you look at the picture of just the 3" down-pipe on CM's site, you can sort of see the metal ring at the bottom.

Careless: (2011-01-17 03:35:27)

That's what I needed to know :-)

Now I see it:

thank you, sir.

I'm going to get the fire extinguisher… my wallet just instantaneously combusted…

Careless: (2011-01-17 03:41:40)

What a joke this innovate LC1 website is.

I need to order another bung and they go for 8 bucks.

shipping… 59 FUCKING DOLLARS.

I'm not asking for the patents on the fucking thing. SHEESH.

300zxturboftw: (2011-01-17 04:39:53)

Get someone from the states to order it then send it to you. If not, just ask the guy from CM performance to weld on the bung. He would be more than happy to for a few bucks.

Careless: (2011-01-17 04:47:22)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

i put it in the instructions to contact me if he can do it, or convert the AIV bung to an O2 bung in the same direction. It should clear everything in that direction.

It does, thats where I have mine.

1986zxt: (2011-01-19 17:45:07)

Late to the party. I have the CM turbo back, 3", hi flo cat, dual tip. Everything needed to mount was there, slight fitment issue, dual tips look great and sound great

Careless: (2011-01-19 18:07:02)

any pics/sound clips? I already ordered, but it would be nice to make sounds in my sleep :zzz

What was the fitment issue regarding?

DavidA: (2011-01-20 09:14:20)

maybe this will help? :-)

I have the stainless 3" turbo back with single tip, just not installed yet :-?

1986zxt: (2011-01-20 16:49:36)

My mechanic put it in for me and is always skeptical about any aftermarket parts I bring him. He was most impressed with CM. He said he had to trim about an inch of pipe off to get everything to line up correctly. He cut approx. 1" off where pipe goes up and over the… can't remember. It's been a year or so. Subframe, maybe? Help me out.

I won't be able to get a clip as it is at the shop for a few days. Boost controller + gauge. I listened to the clip posted above. That would be it.

Careless: (2011-01-20 22:43:03)

Cool thanks for the reply

1986zxt: (2011-01-21 17:03:32)

Sure. Now you can make the sounds in your sleep. :-D

Careless: (2011-01-31 06:46:59)

I'm the luckiest guy on earth, seriously.

Not only did I have to pay more for shipping, but CM forgot to weld in the O2 bung so now I will receive the exhaust on Thursday, and have to find someone to weld a bung in on Friday if I can get the day off work and locate a shop with a stainless bung all so I can install it on the coming weekend.

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

did you call them? I would make them make a new one and ship it to you free and pay for the shipping on that one back while letting you use it till you get your other one

Careless: (2011-01-31 19:35:53)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Yeah… causeeee I have all the power to "MAKE" him do that, and force him to pay shipping.

That's totally unreasonable/unnecessary. it's a 6 dollar bung. I ordered one from my Vibrant supplier. I actually ordered an angled and straight one and I'll be taking it to my welder to have it put in.

It's not a big enough deal to tell him to withhold the entire shipment. just sucks that I have to do that.

Water under the bridge. It would cost me more in time away from work and travel expense to have a custom exhaust made at the only shop I would trust to do such a thing at a fair price…

1986zxt: (2011-02-01 13:31:28)

He is pretty darn good to work with with. Was very responsive with my order but I did not request anything further than a standard order. Always something isn't it?

Careless: (2011-02-01 15:28:37)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Yes, he's a very nice guy to deal with… Not particularly peeved as I found a way around it (just that we're getting a huge snowstorm starting to day so it makes everything difficult for this weekend)…

Always something, though.

300zxturboftw: (2011-02-01 17:38:26)

He's a one man crew for this stuff. You have to give him a lot of credit for what he does for our community. At least you are a reasonable customer Careless. As you stated not a big deal, but pain in the ass lol.

Yeh, good luck with that storm. A company I deal with, Affinity Online Solutions, in the Richmond Hills area in Ontarior is scrambling. I talked with several reps today. Sounds like you folks are going to get hammered along with a lot of folks in the mid-west. Be careful

Careless: (2011-02-02 18:18:14)

Well, storm wasn't terrible. Maybe in Richmond Hill it is… that's about 25 minutes from my house. 40 minutes north got hammered. My friend can't even get his car out of his garage and he has no where to shovel the snow to as of right now. LOL.

Good enough weather for FedEx to drop off a nice box [archived image: biggrin.png]

Spoke with Dave form CM Exhaust today on the phone. He apologized for the O2 bung mishap mainly because he questioned where I wanted it (at the AIV fitting)… I ordered two bungs and will pick them up later. I'll be putting both bungs on the downpipe and just plugging the one I don't use. works for me :-)

Careless: (2011-02-03 03:03:27)

lol @ the stock exhaust… my father who doesnt give a crap bout cars looks at the downpipe after i ripped it off today and says "que porco de merda".

(italian -> english translation "what a piece of hog shit")

Careless: (2011-02-06 02:33:32)

well today ended in a near complete install, save for the fact that the subframe over-pipe is hitting everything; the diff, the subframe, and the chassis… and the muffler pipe doesn't completely go on, and the bracket that holds the crush clamp (crush clamps on an aftermarket exhaust?! wtf) is way to close to the cv-boot on the half-shaft.

this CM exhaust needs to be engineered with a better jig or something.

XiOus271: (2011-02-06 04:49:51)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

I am not a fan of the crush clamps either. My MSA exhaust has them on the same areas of the exhaust (granted I did not have issues hitting anything), and due to the apparently tight press-fit tolerance, I couldn't get mine to come apart after only being on the car for about a year and driven in a relatively low rust part of the country (Memphis, TN). I ended up replacing that one section with a V-band, made everything so much easier! Good luck with your exhaust.

Careless: (2011-02-07 04:19:53)

well i got it in. i couldn't use the hanger that bolts to the exhaust clamps, but i had a nice 1/8th metal strap that i attached to the muffler pipe that holds it to the hanger on the frame rail that the rear diff mount hangs onto.

was a bitch to try and get it to avoid the u-joint on the aluminum driveshaft, as it's quite a bit wider. Hopefully it doesnt start banging on the exhaust the first time i hit a pot hole.

we'll see.

i couldn't really get the tips to be level either, one is like 5mm lower than the other, but when summer/spring rolls around it'll be easier to lay on my back and hammer the pipes with a rubber mallet and get them to fit a bit better.

sounds amazing :-) my neighbour from across the street was coming back from watching the 1st quarter of XLV at his friend's place and then came across the street to see what was up. he was like daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaym.

JSM: (2017-10-09 21:03:57)

Old thread yes, curious, does this connect to the stock down pipe right off the turbo or does it bolt directly to the turbo replacing it? Hard to tell from CM pics. Has anyone dynoed the difference before and after?

it connects right up to the elbow downpipe. at least it did on mine. I can send a picture if you want to see. I had a 2.5" SS turbo back exhaust put on my 87 2+2. pretty solid. no V-clamps or crush bends. bolts right up. but you will no longer have any of the exhaust heat shields that came on the Nissan pipes.

Bon

JSM: (2017-10-11 12:40:02)

Thanks Bon. power difference?

bonfire79: (2017-10-11 13:21:32)

I don't know yet exactly as my car was N/A and went turbo. so more power with turbo for sure, but I can't really speak for the exhaust. I can tell you that it is a nice sounding system and based on the design, it doesn't have any exhaust leaks or clamps that can be torn off. I would imagine it would have a much better power gain on a stock n/a car. it will definitely breath better than the stock system though and will be better for your turbo car, but I'd go 3" if you want better power gains.
