I'm piecing together some stuff to make a big brake package, my aim is to have it bolt-on for people with non-turbo front hubs (yay!) but of course you'll need longers studs pressed in (ichiba/peak…)

  • snip*

So it's becoming reality, there's been a little delay on the rotors but they are coming, the calipers will be arriving sooner, the brackets will be made on demand

The rotors will be 2-piece with T6061 hats (black) designed to fit over Z31 non-turbo front hubs (all years) in 4 AND 5 bolt pattern, the rings will be 330x32mm high tensile iron, slotted, directional vane

Calipers are going to be massive mofos (black), pads will have approximately 24% greater surface area and 8% larger piston area than Z32/R32 calipers

A very very attractive pre-buy for 3 lucky sobs will begin in mid-october, delivery around mid-november, everyone else will be directed to a vendor who will pick up the remaining sales [archived image: smile.png]

Pre-buy price will be announced when it starts, retail price will be determined by vendors, but should be well below $1000 for the complete front brake kit

If everything goes right, I will also have extended wheel studs available at an attractive price [archived image: smile.png]

They will look something like this:

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

I still cant figure out who needs $1500 in brakes when the stock size stuff is more than adequate. Ask anyone here who road races about stock z brakes. Our lemons car has na brakes with porterfield pads and nobody out brakes us.

GE with a 2 piece rotor, late style turbo rear brakes could be fitted direct to any Z31 Rear trailing arm without modification.

The only reason i had to space my calipers out was to suit the rotor I was using, had i opted for a custom hat/race style rotor it would have been bolt on.

Didn't Advanman have a bolt on mega front brake upgrade/brackets/ hat style/floating rotors already ?

more options the better I suppose.

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

Just before anyone goes crazy, it would be less than $1000 total, pad selection would be enormous, and replacement rings would be ~$100 each

GE I'll be interested in this in probably early 2nd quarter next year? Need to purchase expensive welder and a few other things first lol.

And yes, AV had a sweet front setup using Wilwood Superlight calipers IIRC.

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

With 32mm thickness, that requires R32 GT-R calipers or Brembo calipers and aren't that readily available in the US. That's some money in just the calipers. Unless you can find us a great deal on R32 GT-R calipers I would think about it.

Well I'm just getting the Arizona Z car big front brake setup with 6 pot calipers for the z31, also is 2 piece, and since I have z32 rear setup I can get the 4 pot brake kit for the rear, should be perfect for street and road racing. Plus all together the kit is just of $2k for a complete track car brake setup!

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

Hey G-E, do they make 2-piece rotors for the stock sized R32 GT-R rotors and calipers?

I would think about 2-piece rotors for GT-R setup and the GT-R calipers if could be had at decent price. Do you know if the R32 bits bolt right on the turbo hubs and such with just a spacer to center the caliper like we do with Z32 bits?

For someone hanging onto my nuts so hard, you obviously only read posts about daydreaming. 90% of my posts are helping people who were never taught to think for themselves.

A z31 with big brakes look cool but nobody who buys them will ever use them. That won't stop you or anyone else from wasting money but you don't need to make people new to the z31 think that brakes are a weak point.

My buddy had R32 GTR calipers on z32 rotors and 88 turbo hubs, I don't know how much he had to space the calipers.

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

I am interested in seeing a final price. These calipers would be new or used?

G-E: (2012-09-07 23:23:09)

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

I'm running those on my 87' 2s with turbo hubs, only needed to move the caliper out 4mm to center everything properly, it's in my build thread of sorts… fit's nice, and at 11.8" probably all I'll ever need on that car, and I liked the logo (dba has 2-piece gt-r rotors for those at the bargain price of 800/pair)

My main concern with those calipers is they are very hard to come by in quantity and even more so regionally in small numbers --- the last thing I want is people crying about kits they can't source the rest of…

For me they aren't too hard to source for $400 just for calipers being in canada (mine ended up costing $370 rebuilt, with pads and rotors), but I think that's too high first of all, and it's not like I can just order a pair when I need them, I have to wait for availability, which is not a good thing if I plan to produce a bunch of kits (with or without calipers included)

So like I said, I'd rather standardize on something I can source new/rebuilt, and preferrably one that's not difficult to find through junkyards/ebay (kind of a junkyard too? haha), something used on many performance vehicles ideally, lastly something that comes in aluminum [archived image: smile.png]

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

Im just going to throw this out there....

With s13 having infinite available bolt on methods for bbk like EVO and STI Brembos, z32, R32 just to name a few I think the main issue is the availability that these kits only work on the later style turbo slip on hubs. If you were able to provide 2pc rotors that were available to work on any z31 5 lug hub would be widely beneficial. Lets say used slip on hubs typically run $100, or someone needs to machine down bolt on hub for $100 either way your spending money to convert to a slip on hub. If there were rotors available for a simple z32tt 30mm brake swap (widely available) on any 5 lug car would be widely beneficial and easy to market. You could even offer a spacer kit that would allow for the z32 caliper -->350z track rotor (12.75" 2 pc rotor) maximizing the weight saving from not having giant hat and wasted rotor weight.

While big, there is a lot of added weight, and useless rotor on my 86 setup

I like your original idea, but just trying to help you with availability and mass market opportunities.

G-E: (2012-09-11 17:34:36)

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

UPDATE: Caliper availability is solved, I just need to plonk down enough money…

I will still need to get brackets made as they are radial mount, and will have to spec out the hat dimensions, otherwise everything is on target [archived image: smile.png]

Small update: I should have engineering samples of rotors in about 2 weeks, should find out then how well I've done my homework

Rotors = 330mm slotted high-tensile iron, just shy of HT350 for you engineer types

Hats = T6061 with 66m bore, dual drilled 4/5 lug

Calipers = 4 piston: 44mm x 2, 40mm x 2

Brackets = one thing at a time [archived image: smile.png]

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

aceman, i agree that not everyone (anyone?) needs brakes this powerful.

but at the same time- who needs 500whp?

who needs to make 11 second passes and not compete for money?

who needs to accelerate from 0-100km/h in less than 5 seconds?

who even needs a car to tinker with when they can buy a car that's fast already?

a want is a justifiable need.

i guess you will contend that those people who have all those things are probably very laid back street drivers and still use their car on track days.

so i guess those who want to buy these brakes are those same people who may some day think they have to out-brake a 997 or a mk4 supra or something.

let them have it if they want it.

nothin' personal, but what's it to you?

you going to police the cost vs. usability of every product that gets offered as an additional option?

if you don't approve of it, offer something better for people to spend their money on? I dunno.

I'm all for positive discussion of the pros and cons of developing a product for our cars.

Backbiting and negativity aren't going to be tolerated though. Chill with that.

As for who needs it, that's for each individual Z31 owner to decide I suppose.

In regards to having them available, G-E is putting forth the effort to get these made on his own dime, so - as a business owner - I can appreciate the risk he is taking.

Options are options guys - the more we have, the better the ownership community ends up being.

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

Nice looking calipers, they look similar to SRT-8 calipers I would love to see the size comparison between these and the newer Akebonos.

Has piston size and caliper weight been determined? Will these use a bracket or direct bolt, if a bracket is used, weight?

Sorry if this has been covered I only glanced

G-E: (2012-09-27 20:37:20)

Re: Who's interested in 2-piece brakes?

The calipers are only a smidge heavier than the r32 ones, that's all I can tell you [archived image: smile.png]

There will be a steel bracket (I don't trust aluminum threads) but I can't see it adding up to more than an 87t caliper

The rotor will also be a lot lighter

Caliper piston area is about 7-8% bigger than z32, the pad area is significantly bigger, maybe 20-25%?

well i think that's an unfair assumption considering those who buy the kit will only have to make sure their BMC and wheels are of the right size to accomodate the kit, and it will be a simple installation.

It's not the same as a subframe kit that ultimately costs up to 10 times the price of the installation kit itself to actually install it properly (fair assumption based on price of associated parts not included).

I have never had pedal this good since I bought the car. OEM BMC, stainless lines and Wilwood BBK. I doesn't sink or feel soft.

Careless: (2012-10-12 20:30:22)

Re: Response Type BIG BRAKE kit, 13 inches for non-turbo hub

i had the oem BMC and switched to a z32 1" bmc, it felt similar.

I wouldn't say the pedal modulation is worlds "better". but you really get a sense of how much more braking power the z32 caliper has when you switch. I like the Z32 bmc a little better. but either feels good/more than usable with the z32 calipers.

I can't say how well it would work on the huge calipers in this kit though. they're quite a bit larger than the already large upgrade that the z32 calipers provide. the bmc you use will have to be able to displace a lot more fluid from the master in order to make use of the entire stroke of all 4 pistons… on both sides, which is a lot more fluid. so i think the pedal feel with the OEM bmc is going to show its shortcomings on a kit like this.

i mean, looking at s-chassis upgades, people go to the z31 bmc as an in-between feel when upgrading to z32 brakes.

this kit is easily classified as an upgrade to both the skyline and the z32 calipers… so it seems as though the largest z32 bmc might be the one to make use of the entire fluid cavity in the caliper.

Neil, unless you get close to the end of life on your pads/rotors, you won't begin to experience the downfall of the BMC. your pedal stroke will stop once the pedal reaches the floor, or the bmc piston reaches the end of the bore. If your brake caliper piston still has a lot more stroke to go, you effectively lose a lot (or all) of the clamping force because you haven't filled the caliper fluid cavity completely- and you won't be able to.

FYI: z31 87T and z32 calipers have almost identical piston area, having 4 pistons in a fixed caliper is the same as 2 in a floating caliper in regards to fluid vs travel

The calipers I'm sourcing are 8% bigger piston area, which shouldn't be a ridiculous stretch for the 15/16's master, so nobody panic haha

Axel kain: (2013-02-03 05:30:05)

VERY interested in how this is progressing! been awhile since an update G-E!

G-E: (2013-02-03 08:42:07)

I know, rotors are held up for stupid reasons on the other end of the country… I have everything else, I'll post pics of the new calipers tomorrow

Axel kain: (2013-02-03 16:47:37)

still have a pre-production buy in spot?

Sexy… I still wanna know what those calipers came off of! You said they would be available from a junkyard? Is that still true?

G-E: (2013-02-07 23:51:15)

Not exactly, these are brand new custom calipers based on a brembo design, the major dimensions like width, centerline to mounting offset, mount spacing etc are pretty common among many other brands of calipers… the most notable "compatible" designs as far as availability via junkyard will be from a certain german company based in stuttgart [archived image: wink.png]

Axel kain: (2013-02-08 01:40:44)

gorgeous! seriously want these on my ride!

G-E: (2013-02-19 03:15:10)

If one day I decide to take over the world, then I will get a real logo heheh

ZinnZ32: (2013-02-19 17:23:10)

Very similar to a few brembo models (which have similar sub-models - but not necessarily the same) New Camaro SS, Rear Srt-8 Charger, 300, Cherokee, etc. Porsche, Evo. Well, I am guessing it is just a re-manufactured brembo part, really!

G-E: (2013-02-28 08:48:06)

UPDATE: I almost fell over when I found out the rotors were dropped off at a local warehouse… damn near everything that can go wrong, went wrong…

I'll be picking them up tomorrow if all goes well

Soooo just wanted to add that the non-turbo hubs WON'T have to be machined to use these rotors…

shromy: (2013-04-03 06:18:39)

What about turbo bolt on style hubs?

G-E: (2013-04-03 06:41:54)

I'm sure somewhere I clarified the distinction, this kit is for bolt-on type hubs, it should have no impact what year or bolt pattern… the 87-89T are the different and easy to upgrade ones, which as people are finding out are getting harder to find and pricier when they do

millsaps: (2013-04-03 23:10:23)

are these bitches ready yet?

300zxturboftw: (2013-04-04 04:32:20)

Shipped to me today.

G-E: (2013-04-05 22:47:32)

Studs arrived too.... since you'll need longer studs than the bolt-on hubs have; you can get nissan or dorman 87T replacement studs if you don't plan to run a spacer, but I imagine people will want the flexibility of longer studs than that

G-E: (2013-04-06 08:03:51)

Careless: (2013-04-06 08:10:23)

my, what big rotors you have.

300zxturboftw: (2013-04-06 20:08:03)

Still haven't even taken mine out of the bag…took me 4 hours today to get the subaru passed for emissions today…stupid modified cars.

millsaps: (2013-04-09 01:39:27)

so whats a total cost and a parts list for parts youll need that arent included?

G-E: (2013-04-09 02:40:03)

What do you mean parts not included? You'll need to buy your own car?

KIT:

2 rotors

2 calipers

2 caliper hardware kits

2 sets of pads

2 brackets

4 bolts

…optionally studs?

NissanEgg: (2013-04-09 03:04:16)

So, final pricing for the 87T+ guys yet?

Any chance we can get the calipers in red?

I like what I see so far. My Z32 30mm setup looks so small behind my 18x9.5" wheels. I want slightly more braking power up front. Recently pushed my car hard and started to get concerned as I felt like the fronts were fading out.

G-E: (2013-04-09 03:24:26)

No calipers are all black for the time being, down the road I'll design my own caliper from scratch, but I'll likely have to have to order 5x as many, then I could offer variety … not ready to do that as you can imagine

Um one thing you will need millsaps is z32 conversion lines, agency power has some dot rated, they go for around $55 from most vendors.. anyone already using z32 brakes will be all set

NissanEgg: why not just get some non-turbo hubs? heh

Careless: (2013-04-09 08:31:52)

2 rotors .. 13"? Brand? Weight?

2 calipers .. Brand?

2 caliper hardware kits .. as in brake lines?

2 sets of pads .. Brand?

2 brackets .. These are the caliper relocation brackets?

4 bolts .. for the "bolt-on" rotors?

…optionally studs .. optional because "not" needed (asthetic benefit)? Brand?

I believe I read that someone else would be "selling" the kit. Is there an estimated cost? Larger rotors (custom), larger calipers, caliper hardware, brake pads, brackets, rotor bolts …

Careless: (2013-04-10 23:15:27)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Quiz, it's pretty obvious that you are trying to push the brake rotor kit that you've had a hand in producing with these questions that have already been answered.

What are you trying to do here?

The calipers are G-E's own brand.

The hardware is used to install the brake pads. You don't get hardware with any of the larger brake pad sets.

The brake pads are shown on page 4 of this thread, and you can buy replacements in whatever flavour you like.

The brackets are to mount the calipers.

The bolts are to mount the calipers to the brackets.

The studs are optional to save on shipping because he's offering extended wheel lug studs for people who want to run spacers to clear their brakes with shallow wheels.

Why does brand even matter for wheel studs?

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Actually, I just asking the same questions that were/are asked of the kit I have. With the penchant of z31 owners asking questions (why can't I?) .. Without reading the entire thread? The question should be? Why do you have such an attitude over what I post? I've never posted anything negative about G-ES's BBK. Why do feel the need to accuse or attack or even defend his BBK? It doesn't need to be defended.

inqui-Z-tor: (2013-04-11 01:05:17)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Thanks .. Pictures answer most inquiries!

Careless: (2013-04-11 01:10:03)

You're asking questions like what "brand" a damn wheel stud is- as if it matters. I am not defending G-E's kit. I am questioning why someone who has a hand in the development of another kit is the only one asking such questions with no obvious intention of buying.

My attitude is nothing personal. I just don't believe in seniority in a car club. :-)

300zxturboftw: (2013-04-11 01:46:45)

The brake pads that come with the kit are super meaty too.

300zxturboftw: (2013-04-11 01:53:29)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Also, no offense to quiz, but this BBK has in mind someone willing to spend the cash for a "serious" kit. Quiz's is nice for the rotor upgrades, but as he said "will only perform for 80 % of community" (basic daily driving/moderate track use). This kit has track use all over it and also those looking to have some amazing stopping power for the streets if needed.

inqui-Z-tor: (2013-04-11 02:21:15)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Seniority? When have I ever .. EVER pulled seniority here ?

As for asking about brands .. It's no different regarding your questions about obtaining replacement parts when needed. You even asked if parts were commercially available or having only 1-source. Obviously G-ES's kit is made for the upper 15-20% performance minded who intends to push the limits (I like that) .. Maybe I'm wrong (I'm no expert, never said or implied I was) but I'm thinking someone who intends to track or race .. Might be interested in a good source of replacement rotors, etc ..

As for my wheel stud inquiry. I guess you're saying (I'm not) .. You can go to eBay and buy just any wheel stud to meet this application?

Yes, I do realize I could have read through all 4 pages and gotten my answers, but then you'd miss the opportunity to contribute …

And as for buying? Me personally ? Nope, you're right. But I do get inquiries from z31 types who don't visit the forums .. Asking about performance enhancements. I don't direct them to the forum, but to the developer .. The more I know (or don't know) helps put the buyer in touch with the correct developer/seller.

300zxturboftw: (2013-04-11 03:22:22)

It's really well done. Everything seems pretty solid. Just have to test mount it on the car and then follow through on purchasing the wheels I want to run for a few months. Slap the expensive tires on and I'm good for the summer after an alignment.

G-E: (2013-04-11 04:39:13)

Holy crap children!

INQ: I understand your question about where they are coming from, you asked the odd question of brand, these are not off-the-shelf parts, everything is either entirely custom or a modified design, the brand is _mine_

I think the failure lies in assumptions, you came to this thread assuming that like many small-biz products, my kit would be a collection of things I've found with adapters to work in our case, the kit isn't an adaptation to the z31, it's designed from scratch for the z31.... partly why it took so long

More generally: The pads included are street pads, why not race pads you ask? Well everyone has different needs, street pads will let you get started without additional purchasesl; it allows you to feel the car, upgrade as necessary to the compound you find most appropriate… I'm not about to dictate selection, that will be up to the vendor or the buyer's shopping/researching efforts, it only makes sense to offer low cost pads

Studs: Since this was designed around non-turbo hubs which have tiny studs, you have two choices, getting normal length replacements, or again _my_ branded extended studs, I'm sure my price is competitive with any you will find, the question becomes why not?

There were some key considerations in this kit: The calipers are huge compared to z32 calipers, if the installation brackets placed the caliper in the same position, you'd need a 20mm spacer to clear any wheels that barely cleared the z32's… everything was designed around the premise that that would be bad (the rotor hat will already add offset), the caliper clearance is modest now, I think adoption would be slower if everyone had to buy wheels specifically designed around big brakes, which would also be bad

300zxturboftw: (2013-04-11 04:45:15)

Whats the difference between the non turbo 84-86 hubs, non turbo 87-89 hubs, turbo 84-86 hubs? I think this may be important to address.

G-E: (2013-04-11 06:53:28)

Being as they all use the same caliper, and same sized rotor, I can't imagine there is any… except those limited run SF models, which appear to use significantly smaller brakes, but even then, no reason to have a third casting (4-bolt vs 5-bolt)

The spacing for the caliper is off about an inch or so. This is me using my bolt on spacer and having the rotor sit out about 2 inches further on the studs so I could bolt the caliper in.

Edit: looked back at your diagram and I see the machine cut caliper mount is supposed to be on the other side. With the rotor all the way seated on the hub with no spacer you are still short. The Bolts come in just above the OEM Bracket and wouldn't reach to the machined bracket. Ill stop by the house one more time, flip it and take pictures. Going to take a break for now.

G-E: (2013-05-11 22:23:39)

Yea bracket goes on the other side of the ears… the radial holes are just a hair off center on the bracket, and as I recall it's the thicker side that touches the ear…

I'm going to verify and hammer an X into them or something to make it clearer

[archived image: DSC02389_zps58b53dc9.jpg]

G-E: (2013-05-11 23:56:36)

Verify the hub surface without the rotor is 82mm from the caliper ears (outside face)… and make sure the rotor isn't jamming on the bore, possible you could have just enough rust and crap on it to keep it from slipping on all the way?

I wish you had closer pics

300zxturboftw: (2013-05-12 00:05:06)

[archived image: DSC02375_zps44326e1a.jpg]

Look through my photobucket.

G-E: (2013-05-12 00:10:53)

....and where is your bucket? *edit* nevermind found it

OK soooo, your factory wheel studs should be 35mm long (below the head) right now, the hub is 9-10mm thick and the rotor hat is 7mm… so with the rotor slipped on all the way, you should still have ~18mm of thread left

A normal wheel will make about 10mm inaccessible, and 6-7mm of thread might be ok by some shops, it's not by me, hence my requiremnent for upgraded studs

IT IS POSSIBLE you need to shave down the sides of your hub to fit inside the rotor, might be a lumpier casting than the one I mocked up originally (though I shaved mine round)

300zxturboftw: (2013-05-12 18:05:01)

I bet the hub needs to be machined round....haha going to confirm that today.

G-E: (2013-05-12 18:38:00)

The inner diameter of the hat is 150mm… if you have large enough calipers or big squares you can check your hubs at their widest points

300zxturboftw: (2013-05-12 20:00:25)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Confirmed. Hubs need to be lathed down to a circle…they are too wide with the hexagon. Sorry no pictures, I just took apart the hub again, test fit and reinstalled the old brakes/rotor.

adamvann3: (2013-05-15 03:03:13)

This brake kit still has a lot of potential, but what are you doing to correct?

Seemed the mission was to offer a Non-turbo hub brake kit. This isnt the case currently. Not being a dick, just trying to push to keep on track. This site needs more innovation.

G-E: (2013-05-15 03:23:36)

What do you mean isn't the case? The only hiccup I see is having to have the hubs trimmed, something I was hoping to avoid?

Careless: (2013-05-15 05:28:10)

well it is an added cost for someone who cant do it on the cheaps. i think the main issue is that trying to clearance it yourself with a grinder is not a balanced way of doing it and that is not something i would entertain, so machining is the only option i guess.

but in comparison to the mishap from powertrix, this is somewhat easily fixable. so not that it has anything to do with powertrix but it seems like everyone is still learning and thats kinda cool that give feedback. ive seen the kit in person and i would have no issue with buying it even if i had to machine my hubs.

does it also fit on the turbo hubs without grinding or are the ODs larger than your machined n/a hubs?

300zxturboftw: (2013-05-15 05:34:17)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

I'm using 85 Turbo hubs. It's an easy fix to machine down and have a sweet BBK. Added cost? You are spending over or close to $1,000 on a BBK, why would you care about $40-80 to machine your hubs? I get your guys point, but these are big boy toys - not for someone who rattle cans their car on budget.

Not to go offtopic but what happened with powertrix?

G-E: (2013-05-15 05:52:39)

Well that other one Inq was pushing said theirs requires hubs machined too.. so either way, the bolt-on guys have added expense, but not nearly the expense of getting slip-on hubs

As for doing it with a grinder, I lathed mine to 143mm, if you see the edge of my hub, it it by no means even, there was a lot of irregularity, I highly doubt my hub is balanced…

However, consider that the imbalance is very close to the center of a huge rotating mass, someone can do some complex math and find out how much imbalance a few ounces could make at a radius of 2-3/4" within a rotating mass of 80lbs extending to a radius of almost 13" if they want…

I'd be very comfortable scribing a circle (rotate hub on spindle with a fixed scribe) and then grind to the line…

Careless: (2013-05-15 06:23:35)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

bolt on is bolt on and added costs are never really welcome when the term bolt on is used. it was a small oversight- just sayin that just because you're spending 1000 on brakes doesnt mean you can't save money where it doesnt have to be spent.

are you going to use the best brake fluid? because you're gonna spend 150 on castrol srf if thats the mindset you have, when you can just use ATE SuperBlu/Typ200 and it would probably do everything you need it to, and you're saving money :-)

you've been harpin the "big spender" horn for a while now, breaux. thats not my thing. i like reserving it for other things.

I will proudly rock my BBK alongside my $60 Rustoleum rattlecan job, lol

I will see how mine fit sometime next week, going to get get them this Saturday. I'm rockin my factory 86 NA hubs, and possess a grinder. Ill post results when I have them. Honestly not concerned with a couple ounces out of balance that close to the centrifugal center. Hell, losing a single wheel weight would have a vastly higher effect.

Careless: (2013-05-15 07:53:03)

true. id probably try with a grinder myself too. im pretty handy with one. but tons of people have been posting weiiiiiiird mods lately that make no sense or are done improperly, so thats why its not something i can say that i would go out of my way to suggest for fixing this issue. kinda why i mentioned it. so no one just cuts chunks off. i think if ya loosen the hub nut it might spin easier and u can just lightly hold the ginder on the hub once you get it close to the final OD.

james: (2013-05-15 08:49:49)

It would not be exceedingly difficult to balance your own hub anyway.

If you mounted the hub to the spindle so it rotated and spun around very freely and marked several points if it keeps stopping in the same position that is the heavy spot and a tiny bit more material can be removed.

Some motorcycle workshop manuals spec this method for balancing wheels, the difference being they add the weight to the opposite side by wrapping wire around the spokes rather than taking material away.

If one is patient a lot can be done with good accuracy with files, squares and marker pens. If you really wanted to get fussy you could mount up a dial gauge and remove material where required.

The individual would have to decide if the money or the time was more valuable.

G-E: (2013-05-15 14:27:34)

{{#if:| wrote:|Quote:}}

Sounds fascinating from a technical standpoint, but to do this you'd have to use something much larger in diameter than the hub, or bolt something much larger and perfectly balanced to it and then attempt this

Jason84NA2T: (2013-05-15 17:58:53)

As the distance to the rotational axis is so small, I would dare to say that a small imbalance in the hub will never be perceptible. In terms of force, 1.0g at the hub is probably .001g at the wheel rim. No cause for concern.

Which is fine. I'm just saying if someone is coughing up over $1,000 for a BBK, $40 to lathe the hubs isn't going to break the bank. I'm not trying to play the big spender card because we are all on a budget obviously. What is "bolt on" when it comes to the Z31? [archived image: rolleyes.png]

Anything with bolts? [archived image: smile.png]

Don't worry, I gotcha. I just thought it was funny for me to point out that one of the other people to have ponied up and got the BBK is rocking a rattle can paint job. Mine is by no means a show car. As far as bolt on? K&N air filter? Wheels? Uhhh…what else am I missing? lol.

300zxturboftw: (2013-05-17 18:11:44)

The project this weekend is the machine the hubs and get the BBK/Tires all mounted. I don't guarantee anything being finished because most the machine shops around me are closed on saturdays. Although…it will be completed by next week and you will have your final yes, it fits or no, I can't believe canada let us down again.

300zxturboftw: (2013-05-20 19:41:57)

Hubs machined…outer diameter (pentagon) had to be rounded and inner diameter had to be machined slightly to fit. Everything looks good now though.

Couldn't get the other side on because (Queue laughter), I couldn't get the fucking dust shield off. 3 little screws weren't having it and I was tired.

G-E: (2013-05-21 04:32:30)

Cut the shield with tin snips, if you manage to cut it so that you have three individual pieces, you can wiggle them, that usually frees the screws… so far I've removed shields on 3 chassis only braking 1 of the bolts, which was easy to drill out backwards

300zxturboftw: (2013-05-21 04:42:23)

Ive got some small vice grips that I'll take to them and it should be out in seconds. Just didn't even care anymore since i still have to remove the hubs to repack them with grease. Wanted to get the rears on then got hit by a severe t-storm where trees were coming down and lightening was striking everywhere (had to drive a couple miles home).

Titanium "heat shields" for pads, really they are backing plates but they make a huge difference in keeping heat out of the caliper and fluid… the downside is the heat stays in the pad, so you need higher temp rated pads if you go racing

Response Type 13" BBK vs. CTS-V + 14" Akebono BBK

Why larger isn't always better…

--- MASS

We all know unsprung mass degrades the ability of suspension components to do their work suspending the chassis, but there's two kinds, static and rotating mass.

If you ever had the joy of growing up in the analog world, with those wind up cars with those heavy flywheels to store your energy, you'll understand how powerful rotating mass can be -- now imagine you had to fight it.

Without melting anyone's brain with calculations, let's just simplify the rotor into a radial center of mass (the rotating mass increases leverage with a larger radius), and a total mass for direct comparisons.

1. the 13" 2-piece rt.trackpro rotors have a mass of 18.7lbs

2. the 14" akebono rotors weigh 30.8lbs.

3. crucially the radial center is just under 3/4" further out for the akebono

In summary: The 14" rotor has about 42% more rotational mass in the rotor, mass that gets multiplied with velocity…

--- TORQUE

The CTS-V calipers have a slight mechanical advantage, the braking torque from the pistons is very close leaning in the CTS-V's favour, but also a small advantage is given to the CTS-V caliper again for pad area.

In summary: The CTS-V caliper has about 15-18% more torque than the RT Big black caliper.

Does that extra brake torque with the CTS-V caliper overcome the massive increase in rotational mass? There will be a speed above which the answer is NO, just like aerodynamic drag will become a larger factor than vehicle weight above a certain speed.

Remember, the faster the rotor spins, the faster the rotational mass gains momentum, momentum which then fights changing speed like a gyroscope. Having a ton of extra mass in the rotor (that has to be accelerated and decelerated constantly), makes the car less responsive to gaining speed, and will also fight the calipers while braking.

--- STEERING

There's another aspect to this brake kit that won't be obvious without having it in hand, and that is the actual rotor distance from the steering axis.

The rt.trackpro rotors are designed so that the heavy "ring" sits as far inboard as possible without hitting anything; without using the rt.trackpro rollcenter adjuster kit, the end of the control arm actually floats inside the rotor! The bottom portion of the ring actually crosses the steering axis.

The akebono rotors as well as most of the nissan rotors have fairly short hats, which simply put means they sit 20mm or further outboard.

When making rapid turns, such as a slalom or possibly quick corrections to maintain balance on a track, the extra leverage of a shorter hat, coupled with a heavier rotor will make steering more difficult.

In summary: This may not be a serious concern with power steering, but for anyone with a manual (or manualized) rack will definitely notice the effort increase.

--- WHEELS

And finally, there's wheel clearance.

Having such tall hats, the rt.trackpro rotors give you about as little caliper profile clearance as possible for a big brake kit. The calipers in the RT BBK protrude approximately 15/16" from the face of the rotor, and have more curvature to them than the sumitomo calipers used on the R32 and Z32.

Most of the large calipers have an overall width between 150-165mm, half of which will be outboard of the rotor ring's center line. If a rotor has a hat height of 25mm, with a ring thickness of 32mm, and a caliper width of 160mm: 160/2 - 32/2 - 25 = 39mm of protruding caliper beyond the hat face.

Based on rough measurements, the example above is pretty close to what's observed for the CTS-V + akebono pairing, approximately 1.5" of protruding caliper.

In summary: If your wheels are designed for big brakes, you should be fine for clearance, but medium disc wheels which clear the rt.trackpro BBK, may not clear the CTS-V + akebono kit.

Mine came preloaded with the pads and I was wondering if everything was greased up already. Also I am having a rubbing sound at a certain point of rotation. It looks like the pad retainer is rubbing on the rotor and it is quite loud. Any thoughts? A bit tired at this point and trying to get a game plan for tomorrow.

utjon: (2020-10-22 20:55:25)

Actually it is the retainer/spring rubbing the rotor… Ended up bending them slightly and problem gone. Was only an issue on one side. Wondering if the spring was out of spec.
