Well I tore down the Shiro engine that my customer got with his new Shiro not too long ago. Found out some surprising facts regarding the differences between these two oil pumps. It seems that as the years progressed the oil pumps gradually got bigger and better. Its sort of interesting to see the progression in which Nissan took in upgrading the parts as the times evolved.

I think it is great to be able to see side by side why the auto turbo oil pump is better.
Now you just need to make some high quality gears for the auto turbo oil pump, along with your proven higher flowing oil pump modifications! That would be awesome.

thank you…I weighed the two gear sets as well. I'm just waiting for my digital cam to recharge to take images of those. You can tell right away that the Turbo Auto pump is made of better material as far as the gears are concerned. The inner gear I weighed came in at over 20+grams from the Auto than that of the 5spd. Definitely an improvement over the 5spd to say the least.
Soon to come…after thanksgiving I'll have the new cad file drawn and I will have at least 10 sets of gears made for the Auto pumps. I just need to buy the 10 auto pumps and then do my modifications to the housings and then assemble them with the new gears and the Z31 community will have its very own HD Ported Turbo Oil Pump.

well all I'm doing is making the same gear out of stronger material. I'm not increasing the dimension of the gears themselves from what the Auto ones are already. Just making them out of better/stronger material. So pressures will show nearly the same but the recovery and efficiency of the pump is where the work will show its pay off.
The ultimate test will be showing this Shiro engine I'm building maintain oil pressure above 7500RPM and doesn't fault by cracking or distorting.

So wait… They are NOT going to be ported now like you stated before? So then all you are modifying is the gear set in an OEM Auto turbo oil pump right? I'm a little confused now.
This is why I was wondering… Obviously pressures would stay the same even IF the pump had larger gears. I was wondering about how you would go about showing that a pump FLOWED more. You can create a higher PSI by shimming the spring. But that is not what we want to do. We want more flow, not more PSI.
Also, if you could please help me understand how the recovery would be better in this pump, I would appreciate that. I honestly do not even know which recovery you are speaking of. But how does just changing the material the gears are made out of, do anything to the pump OTHER than make it stronger?

No…all the pumps I offer will be ported with upgraded gears and so forth. No matter what, any of the oil pumps that I sell with be ported. The purpose of the porting is to increase cross section of the oil pumps passages and allow it to flow more efficiently with a better recovery rate. If we solve this criteria the oil pump issues will be solved…you guys just now need to focus on a harmonic damper and then you guys will be rockin.
Recovery in the form of getting oil back to the pump and through the pump cycle faster and easier. Thats the recovery I speak of. Right now there are large sections of the pump that are a big restriction in how the oil pump flows. You make those more efficient and the recovery improves. It all works together. Aside from the porting…making the gears stronger enables you to have less distortion to the gears, withstand harmonics better, won't flex under load or crack easily due to the material, and being that I will WPC coat each gear set will ultimately make this gear set thrive for a VERY long time.

There have been many that have stated in a previous thread that oil pump gears are cracking and breaking on them. Many have never understood why but my gatherings is due to harmonics coupled with stress and distortion.

As far as I am aware there is only one known set of gears breaking. 1SickZ. No one else has ever stated or showed another set of cracked gears. Hell that could be chalked up to a manufacturing or material defect.

My old Z had cracked oil pump gears and banged up my bearings pretty bad too. That car is gone now and my shiro is my new build soon.
So my eyes are open..
If it makes matters worse the car was auto, turbo. So a better gear set made of better material is in order.

Well I don't know if they are physically the same but both the fiche and courtesy parts show 2 part numbers for the auto turbo oil pump, up to 3/87 and from 3/87 on.

I ported my own pump- it was pretty easy to do. The opening to the outlet port from the main pump chamber has a square edge. It doesn't take a rocket scientist (I'm soooo not one) to see that it needed to be opened up to allow for easier entry. I also rounded the 90* bend where it turns toward the block. I have no flow data to back up my work.
While on the subject of oil flow…
The oil galleys in my block lined up terribly as well. It was nothing a little die-grinding couldn't cure but if left alone, my oil volume - no matter what the turbo pump would put out - would be terribly dimishied where it mattered. Maybe everyone knows this already. I think I posted this somewhere here before and I 'd check but i work 11+ hours a day and have 2 kids at home. This is a rare treat for me.
Total sidebar… I'm quitting my new job and will be wrenching again. I should have more time to play on the computer and I'm looking forward to 8hr work days again :-)

If you look on the page, there's this image here, of the frontier pump (which requires a 100 dollar water pump as well, that is much different).

If you notice, the pump has the same drivegear as the z31 style. It's not the quest style that I had in my pump, which is the same as the RB style pumps.
I just found this surprisingly different to what I knew about the current VG33 pumps. look how large the pickup throat is.

That's just the way it is 'round hurrrrrr.
The pumps you see at the top are the factory Frontier water pump and oil pumps.
They show the gear design that is similar to the Z31 oil pump design.
The lower pumps pictured are the RB series N1 and Factory oil pumps. They are shown to depict the gear design because I've not had the chance to dig up my VG33 pump pictoral folder to show the internals. I posted it here somewhere but at the present time I can't find it. 260DET, if you remember through our PM posts, I mentioned that there were two different oil pumps. One with the U shape, and one with the V shape. The Frontier one posted here is the V shape.
Remeber I told you that the only difference I suspected was the mounting for accessories like the lower timing cover, and how there is a hole at the BOTTOM of the V pump at the front side, pictured below. This is for the alternator mounting bracke… or perhaps a thin cover, as the belt cover is integrated in to the outer edge of the pumps, as clearly visible below

So lets ignore the RB pump pictures I posted, as I dug up the pictures for the VG33 pump that I posted. Here's the difference in design:
I think for someone going the VG33 route, it may pay to have the Frontier Pump internals Cryo-treated or heat-treated to increase hardness. Reason being, 1sickZ posted this as one of the failure points for the Z31 pump:
Notice the crack at the top of the pump drive.
Just posting because I'd like to get some thoughts on what we can do to make these engines last longer. I think in 3 or 4 years if this car is still around and I am still loving it, or I have the money to freshen up the bottom end, if I'm going to go with forged pistons and rods, and pop the crank out, I may upgrade to a Frontier pump.... if it's an upgrade.

heres the ugly part, and may or may not allow this to work with Z31 accessories the same way I have mine running.
Look at the timing covers… there's 4 pieces to it.
But if the oil pump design is better, it may be worth looking into. I mean… It would be easy to adapt everything outside the car the same way i did.... except for the power steering pump I modified, which is a complete success.
Waterpump snout is definitely longer too.
Everything is well priced though. Oil pump is about 150, water pump is about 60, Belt is about 20, Belt + Tensioner is about 65.
There's also an alternator belt idler pulley. Looks like they put it there because of the slipping issues the other front cover styles have becaues you really have to tighten that front belt down. Some people report the belt being so tight that the front main bearings take a beating.

That Frontier? oil pump with the wavey rotor above looks to be the same as the one out of my JDM El Grand VG33E which I just pulled apart. I agree it looks better than the gear tooth rotor ones, which seem to be an obsolete design anyway.

- The sharp tooth one is the same design used in the Z32 and the Z31, and is the Frontier Pump, picture taken by nissannut.
Things of note:

- First Z32 was out after that…
Not sure why they decided to go with two designs. Especially since the RB motors did come in a performance/flag-ship vehicle that had a "high-strung" engine, all things considered. And that engine should be comparable to the venerable VG30DETT in most respects.
I'm not sure if it's a packaging issue, but the size of the Frontier rotor seems a bit larger and holds more volume along the inside of the case by the looks of it.
The only thing that prompted me to post this information was due to the fact that Mike Kojima didn't specify which pump was on the VG33's that he said did not provide enough oil for big turbo applications. I'm curious to know which one he was utilizing at the time. He made the comment that the Z31 crank should be used because the oil pump that goes with it is more capable. So if the Z31 oil pump is the same as the frontier one (by it's looks)… it seems as though he may have been talking about the quest one.

First of all I don't accept that the Z32 has a gear tooth design pump, the ones I have physically inspected have the wavey design. Maybe the early ones did but I doubt it.
Secondly, I would not take too much notice of that comment about which pumps do and don't have a turbo capacity. A ball bearing turbo requires very little lubrication, typically the oil feed incorporates a restrictor to limit supply. Also there was no test data given as which pumps flowed what.

EDIT: Correction, its the VG30DE/DET which has the wavey type rotor, the VG30DETT has the gear type. NB The VG30DET is a JDM only engine.

Without getting back into that convo, I'll just say for the record that the people who were irritated with what was claimed or said were the ones who were asking for the data, not making promises. Redemption is easy for anyone to attain on Z31P. Just as fast as one can be cast out.
And I didn't meant to accuse you of taking the pics down. I just figured that's what happened because it says they "have been moved or deleted". When the bandwidth is exceeded, it says the bandwidth has been exceeded. Just sayin…

Mitch (Tech@EPR) posted the pictures of the internals of the Z32 pump. It's much like what I've linked from Nissan Nuts page, just about 20% larger if I remember. He posted a powerpoint presentation at one point. Fact is, they use the same gear design. The VG30DET, as you said, may have the different one since you've seen it yourself.
And I've not seen any posts from Mike in a long time my self. They were all back-tracked cached posts. Our knowledge-base of these engines has come a long way since then, and the power from the standard fare VG engine has since doubled on most street driven motors on these parts. In such little time, that's not too bad for an engine that seems to have gotten little exposure in the street-racing circles lately. It gets more exposure in the rock-climbers from what I can see.
Fact is, he knows his VG's. I do not have enough information from his post, nor from my own experience to quantify whether or not a Turbo motor requires much more oil, but I believe what he was getting at was the fact that the oil wears thin once it passes through the turbo due to the heat generated. Having a lack of pressure and volume means any orifice, restricted or not, will reduce pressure at a higher rate as the engine is pushed harder and harder. I've not tracked the motor yet, so I cannot say.
But I think before I do, I will be putting in an accusump and a hobbs switch to cut the motor power if oil pressure gets below where it should be. After I get my SPA Dual gauges for temp/pressure though.
Still wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the gears though. I don't know enough about the designs to say anything, I just noticed the difference between two different applications.

Z32 twinturbo pumps have a gear tooth design…the NAs have the "wave" design. Both have the same housings but the twinturbo pumps have larger and thicker gears. The NAs are vastly inferior to the TT pumps. I would dare say that even the NA pumps (if they were interchangeable) will flow more oil than the stock turbo and even the AT Turbo oil pumps.
As for the images....I wasnt going to purchase a photobucket account just to increase bandwidth for ppl to view when I owned 10gigs of webspace with my website. I just uploaded the images on my server and kept them there.

Yes…judging by the size of the gears and overall area of the pump itself even the NA pumps will flow more than the Z31 oil pumps. The only way to find this out for sure is to run a test but honestly I don't see that being feesable in fabricating a test bench to find flow analysis. I'm merely making my statement based on physical attributes and the demand at what the DOHC engines need oil.

While I don't think fabricated a test bed would be all too hard if one had a broken snout from a crank shaft. I do agree that DOHC engines do tend to require almost twice as much lubrication in the same configuration.
If you say you've measured both pumps then I will believe you.
I kind of wish I kept my Z31 oil pump to crack that thing open.

Which Z31 and Z32 pumps are the ones you show though? There are two types of Z31 pumps aren't there and just to complicate matters more I'm told by a reliable source that the later Z32 NA oil pumps changed from a wavey design to a gear tooth design, there is supposed to be a Nissan service bulletin on it.
EDIT: looking at the measurements you gave in the opening post, it looks like you are comparing the two types of Z31 pumps, not a Z32 with a Z31 pump.

I was advised from Courtesy Nissan and Nissan Australia that the OEM Turbo Auto pump is discontinued and I could not find one in stock anywhere.
I had to settle for a Atsugi made pump sold as Clevite. I'm not 100% confident in using a $50 oil pump that has basically no testimonials regarding its usage either.

if you have an auto pump to compare, take them both apart (who cares, it's 50 bucks), and compare the thickness of the gears and the quality of the casting. measure the clearances as per the fsm specs. and then check the hole depth on the pressure relief spring and nut/washer spacer on both. if they are both the same exact depth, then put whichever spring feels stronger into the pump you intend on using so you will have a bit of an increase in oil pressure or at least nissan spec in oil pressure and not some random off the shelf spring that clevite probably uses in sentra oil pumps or something.
you shouldn't have a problem. nissans newer oil pumps are 70 bucks OEM anyway- and made in mexico. if everything is the same… its only testament to reliability would be the casting quality. and really if the specs check out on the FSM, you could just clean out an old auto pump and reuse it with a new spring or a couple of shims. that way you can have nissan oem reliability if that's what you want.

I had a look through this thread and I remember reading a few others a while ago. I knew that part already, I suppose my main question is if the Z31 turbo auto oil pump is no longer available from Nissan as 300zxt said earlier then what is going to be the best pump to use? Because it has only been known for a while that the Z31 turbo auto pumps were the best ones to use. And again as stated by 300zxt I wouldn't like to rely on a $50 aftermarket pump with out some good reviews or testing to be done.
So is there another pump made by Nissan that is equal or better than the Z31 turbo auto pump that will work on our motors? Or is there a aftermarket pump that can be used and be as reliable as the Nissan units?

Clevite is a respectable brand, but information is slim about Atsugi who is the actual manufacturer of the pump. I have one on order but I'm still not 100% comfortable in using it and I may re-use the original oil pump yet. I will be letting my machinist make the call when it arrives…

not sure what your machinist is gonna say about the pump that's going to make anything better. u dont have many other options. you can send it to mitch to have it ported.

Atsugi was a OE pump supplier for Nissan. Don't know if they specifically provided them for the Z31 or if Nissan rotated suppliers. I did the research on these when, prior to Mitch's offering of ported pumps, I had contemplated offering them.
I obtained a Clevite pump, verified it was Atsugi, and checked the measurements on the gears. They matched the measurements of a Auto/Turbo pump, and appeared to be of good quality.

That pump has been known to be larger for quite some time. it is stated in the FSM what the size of the internals may be.
As for what pumps. The 2011 Nismo Competition catalog has a resurgence of parts- namely R200 CLSD clutch and spring discs, as well as a VG30ET competition oil pump.
might be worth looking into.

I just thought I'd throw these online for reference purposes.
I found an old OEM oil pump I forgot I had so I can also confirm that the Clevite/Atsugi part is identical to the OEM pump which is a relief! Damn good price too for only $50, I was quoted $450 from the Nissan Australia dealer before they realised they were NLA.
I'm happy now, the engine assembly can be completed! :P

Hmm, let me be "old threads digger", but I have a question.
all EUDM z31 were equipped with oil cooler (ALL).
All turbo z31 were only manual, and had same pump to USDM AT Turbo.
But, NA EUDM, also equipped with oil cooler, had another pump 1501006P02 (or 03, depending on year).
this pump also could be found only at y31 cedric. As well as I won't be able to get 07p03 (and want not to disassemble brand new 06p03) will it be enough to measure outside of body, to be insure in gears dimensions, thickness at least (springs have same PN-s)

thanks to tech@epr for dimension, but what I found there (also I disassembled 10.84 turbo mt USDM pump and 04.89 JDM, and maxima j30):

if you get a new pump by-pass valve already included, but, if you'll get it separately, you can get type you need.
I'll post pictures later, on weekend.

I'm digging this up again. What did you conclude on the Euro NA 15010-06P02 and P03 pumps? Are they like the USDM manual pumps but with a different bypass valve? Or are they still more like the Euro turbo/US auto turbo 07P02/P03 pumps? I'm sorry, I couldn't understand everything in your post.
