In 1977, Datsun offered a Special Appearance Package on the 280Z called the "Z-Zap Z". It was offered only in Bright Sunburst Yellow paint (paint code 411) with a special decal package, rear window shade, racing mirrors, and side stripe.

The Z-Zap Z also received top, side, and deck stripes. Approximately 1,000 were produced.

The "Zap Z" model was also used as the pace car in the 1977 Long Beach Grand Prix.
