Rev 2 can use either an nvram chip or a romulator. If you decided to go with the nvram I would suggest waiting for rev3 as it will have the nvram built in instead of having to buy it and program it yourself. All nistune versions will provide realtime editing unless you choose not to install nvram or a romulator. I think rev3 comes with nvram by default.

I really don't think that you should take it to heart like that. It was just a suggestion to keep the producer of the software from getting bombarded with questions that can be answered by people with first hand experience already using the product. It would make sense to ask the questions here as well, since you will be adapting the software to the z31.

To answer your question I have no doubt that m30 support will work. The m30 uses the same 6303 cpu as the z32 and other ecus. I think at this point its a matter of finalizing the board design for the 6303 ecus and doing testing. The m30 code will need to be modified just like the z32 code so that it works with the extra Nistune functions. That should be a trivial task for Matt unless something stupid comes up. Unfortunately someone with an m30 ecu will need to try it out before anyone can actually gaurantee you that it works. If you are willing to be a guine pig then you can try contacting matt.

In addition, the Willem Programer will only be used to extract the stock rom image right? Because this Nistune board will already be plugged into laptop directly using USB.

You won't have to solder, the board and NVRAM just push into place the same as any ROM chip.
The programmer (chip burner) would only be needed if you wanted to burn a new base image on the NVRAM chip, or burn an ordinary PROM chip to put in place on the ECU when you have "completed" a tune.

Hmm...... here is the reply I got from Matt:
To install the boards
1. You need to remove the two factory ROM chips and
four jumpers and a resistor
2. Read the ROM chips and program the board (using a
Willem programmer in NVRAM mode)
3. Install a 28 pin machine drilled socket and install
four new jumpers
4. Solder a 4 wire connector to the 6802 CPU legs
5. Remove the factory adjustment pot and put the USB
connector in the bracket
6. Put the board in the ECU, plug in the connectors,
hot glue and reinstall into the vehicle
Some installation instructions are available. I've
taken pictures during my last install.
It will be $10AUD postage and handing for the board.
However if you want I can perform the installation
procedure here, if you send the ECU. It would be
instead $40AUD return postage

Was the soldering he mentioned referring to his own Nistune board and not to stock ECU?
So I guess a programmer isn't really necessary, if the new tune image won't be erased when I unplug the laptop right?

There are a few wires that need to be soldered between the nistune board and the stock ecu.
Here's the deal with the nvram. Currently the nvram chip is a standard 28pin chip which can be put in the willem programmer and programmed with a few special steps. Once the base image (stock bin modified with the nistune code) is programmed on to the nvram chip it is put on to the nistune board. At this point nistune is able to alter only certain allowed addresses on the nvram which are used to tune. The base code itself is protected so you dont accidentally screw something up. If the base code of the nvram chip becomes corrupt the only way to fix it is with a willem programmer. Also, if you decide to change base code for some reason you must use a willem programmer to do so.
It's my understanding that the final nistune board design, which I'm guessing most people will end up with, will use a surface mount version of the nvram which is not removable. A special adapter will most likely be required to program the nvram with the base code.
When all is said and done I think it will work like this. When you buy nistune you will need to choose a base code for you ecu (84t, 88na, 88t, jwt, whatever). Matt will keep a collection of common base codes or if you have an odd ball you can send him your chip or a bin file of it and he can modify it for nistune. Anyway, the base code will be programmed on to the nistune board by Matt of whoever is selling the board. You will install the preprogrammed nistune board in your ecu, make any required tuning changes, and away you go. No need for a willem programmer.

i just paid off my desk top computer yesterday. sounds like its time to step up to the lab top. i can't wait to get the nistune for my car. i'm very excited for this setup. and you simply cannot beat the price. i hope the guy is making a few dollars off it.

OK: any laptop that will run XP will work fine. I use a Celeron 600 with 128mb ram to run XP Pro for all my car stuff. It is cheap and small so I dont care about it.

This is probably a really stupid question…but does the base code that I choose have to match the ECU I have?
For example…Do I have to ask for the 86NA base code if I'm using an 86NA ECU or can I just ask for an 88T base code or will that not work with the 86NA ECU?

The base code will need to match the ecu hardware. For the most part that means you have to stick with the stock bin that your ecu came with. 86 and 88 are different but 88 and 89 are the same. In some cases you can mix them up between turbo/na and 5spd/auto depending on what features you want and if you make certain modifications to the ecu hardware.

Count me in. Heck, the market going rate for the 88T/NA ecu is around $130. One guy on Z31.com told me he wanted $200 for it. And thats just the ECU, forget about all the other Romulator costs on top of that. Yes, $230 for the whole package is nice and reasonable…I'll start saving for it now.

what about figuring out a way to signal boost regular MAF signals the 2v or so.
I'm talking about bringing the "normal" 0-5v signal to 2-7v's like the ecu's expecting.
In theory, that would get you around having to find the resistors to cut out.

just joined up. bernard forwarded me the link to this page. just to let you know what the deal is with the boards
the current version of boards (rev b) as pictured on the website require a pocket romulator and will work in 1986-1989 Z31 ecus.
i dont think there are any Z31 ecus I can't do. Also I'm not aware of any 16 bit Z31 ecus. the 16 bit ECUs started happening when JECS moved to the MELPS processors after Hitachi got sued by Motorola for ripping off the 6802/6303 processors used in Z31/Z32 ecus. hence only late model Z32 ecus are 16 bit.
these revb boards are the $300AUD mark with the software and installation instructions. i have about six of these left.
currently support three different wideband units (zeitronix, techedge and innovate)
the software should run on any PC. it was written for small size and high speed
was orignally developed on Win98 and still runs this on a daily basis on my test bitch P266 Compaq Laptop with 64MB RAM. It could probably even run on slower machines since the most cpu intensive thing is the logging part of it. It can also run on Windows XP as that is my other dev machine
The revb board itself provides a communiations interface to the ecu to let us read the engine parameters (implementing a consult interface). using a romulator lets you tune in realtime. when you are done, you need to burn an eprom afterwards with the tune
The next generation of boards (revc/revd) in testing are NVRAM based. this means no external emulator (like pocket romulator) is required. you just plug the board in to a socket where the ROM used to sit, solder up 4 wires to the CPU and put in the USB port where the diagnostics connector normally sits and reinstall the ecu
This means you can just plug in the USB connector when you wish, and monitor or change in realtime parameters on the ECU. when you are happy with the changes you 'burn' them and less than 0.01 seconds later they are saved. You can do all this in realtime with the engine running, unlike other products out there for nissans. It pretty much works but I need to get it all checked before i get a batch of them made up. Those will be about a month or so off depending how much free time I get :wink:

I've figured out how to change the Timing and Fuel Maps on my 84T ECCS.
I've also figured out how to convert it over to use the 28DIP EEPROM, just haven't worked on it enough to figure out all the new address's.
As far as the voltage circuit on the MAS, it's easy. It's a voltage divider (scaler), just like the later models.

I'd love this for my 94 N/A VG30E Pathfinder. I'm not going to send JWT 600+ for a shelf tuned ECU that I can't change without sending them my ECU again(and more of my money). I'd rather just buy the Greedy Ultimate E-manage.

OK, so the +88 z31 ecus are not 16bit.
If i were to buy the current revb, i'd need an 88na ECU for my 84T, ala: http://www.redz31.com/pages/fuel/ecucompatibility.html
But, if i wait for the revc/revd i would just retain my 84T ECU, correct?

Rev3 has turned into Rev3A and parts have arrived, just waiting for 11 x PCBs now and then can build them
I have 7 boards assigned to people and about 20 people on an email notification list. The project is not dead, I am just doing a lot of fixes and improvements to the whole project. Please be aware that not only Z31s will be supported but the entire range of Nissans from 1984-1995 with a range of 5 different boards so there is plenty keeping us busy in the meantime.
Fortunately Z31 owners are the first people on the list to get boards since these have been 'field tested' for quite some time now. Contents of the forums are currently mainly discussing field testing results so only current owners have registration enabled. This will be opened once field testing is completed for all boards

Questions about next batch of boards
If I understand correctly (PLEASE CORRECT ME IF Iââ¬â¢M WRONG)
1. the next hardware is NVRAM
2. you can make changes real time
3. you can log data including data from wideband such as Innovate
4. you can save changes in your tune
With the new hardware boards, Can you
1. use a 1988 NA ECU for an 84 Turbo car (such as would be the case for JWT)?
2. use a FORD AFM (as with JWT)?
3. put tune saved with Nistune on a ROM chip & remove the Nistune board if you have a chip burner?
4. use the Nistune hardware on various ECUââ¬â¢s (1988 NA or 1988 T) or are you only allowed to select 1 choice (1 base tune) and stay with that.
5. Do you need to have your computer connected to the board to log data?

I can tell you that 1-4 on your first section is all true.
As far as the second section. 1 and 2 are true if you know what youre doing. 3 will probably be true. 4 depends on whether or not you can build the reprogrammer to reflash the base bin on the nistune board. Yes, you will need your computer hooked up to the ecu to log any data.

Is knowing that the 88 NA and 88 T ECU's utilize different O2 sensors enough?
Is knowing the Ford MAF outputs a voltage vs. air flow enough for question 2?
The reason I asked questions 3 & 4 is that I have an 84 Turbo and an 86 Turbo and would like to use this device on both using an 88 NA or 88 T, respectively, as suggested by JWT. I already have the Ford AFM's, resistors and injectors.
Is Matt the only person that can tell me the answers to 3 & 4?

yep we have a design for a programmer to work with all our boards (8 and 16 bit types) to allow users to reprogram for different ecus. not available yet… just need to get the prototype made up to check it works
however currently we use a modified Willem PCB3B programmer to program the current boards using NTProg available from the download page
for example you set the reprogram jumper, and can put a CA18 ROM image instead of Z31 ROM if you really wanted

so with the currently available version of nistune and a willem programmer i would be able to load different roms onto the board? as of right now the only downside i found with nistune is that you required a base rom to load onto the board before shipping. this would make nistune very very valuable to me.

im sure that this is a touchy subject. im interested in the same functionality. currently i have a romulator and a willem that i use between the 3 vehicles i regularly tune, 2 of them are z31's, but the other has an rb26 that uses a totally different base rom. this would save me the expense of purchasing multiple boards.

Installation is soldering connector with 4 wires to processor pins and then putting the USB socket in the ECU (i normally fit it where the diagnostic connector goes)
Software will run under Win98/WinXP which is what i daily run in on. PC has been Pentium 266 so resource requirements not high unlike other tuning software. It may run under Vista with FTDIs new drivers but I dont run that yet

after that i am waiting for USB Connector boards to arrive since I forgot to order some when getting all the bits .... doh!
those are going to be three weeks which will give us time to make all the connectors up for the remaining boards
I am currently looking into adding knock sensing detection and display into the firmware. I have found where the pulse and error flags get set in the code so just trying to see how the ECU uses them when pulling back timing. This way we can have a display for knock detection when it occurs

those modifications look like they have been done aftermarket (by JWT) however relate to the analogue circuitry
the instructions for 1988/89 are the same. you have a 4 pin header connector silkscreen there on the circuit board, suck the solder out of the four holes and solder the connector wire to this
remove the JWT chip and plug the board in here.... then fit the USB connector where the diag pot is and you should be set
if you want the JWT maps on your board, you will need to read it with an EPROM programmer and open it up and copy them across with the software

I'm currently having some difficulty with a 2002 Pathfinder's engine (my wife's car).
It has an intermittent hesitation at low RPM's and I would like to be able to get the CONSULT-II information when this problem occurs so I can possibly correct it.
3 Questions:
1. Are there any plans to develop NisTune to more recent Nissans like a 2002 Pathfinder (3.5 L) engine?
2. If not, is there any reasonably priced scanner which will provide me with full Consult-II information?
3. Is there a good internet forum for Pathfinders?

We do support some Consult II serial ECUs using the standard PLMS consult interface … on the Nissan Patrol for example
Consult II on later model Nissans may use Consult II over CAN which were are only investigating at this stage. Martin and Peter are putting the board together and I will add the software support for the board in this application. However that is many months away before even prototypes will be available. NIStune has been in development for about 3 years so far

We are looking into using the TXS lite knock sensor feeding into the software. I've enabled reading the knock sensor input from the ECU. This gets sampled at about 9 times per second. Not sure this is fast enough for 'real knocking'
So I'm doing some tests with TXS vs regular knock sensor soon to see how it goes. As of current, no support officially available until I've finished

COBB is geared toward "a.d.d." and "a.d.h.d." subaru retards. They make shit as simple as possible in order to sell the most product. Shit, my friend installed larger injectors and didnt tell the COBB equipment anything and it automatically adjusted everything. That doesnt happen with nistune. While there are limitations, I seriously doubt your goals would exceed what NIStune can provide. The first limitation is the MAF which is easily replaced with a Z32 unit. If you're pushing more than ~600RWHP, you then have a couple different options. 1. You can obtain a higher flowing MAF that's supported, such as the Ford Lightning, or 2. You could delete the MAF entirely and run a MAP setup.

So I just received my Nistune ECU with the Zener Diode installed for use with the lightning MAF. Thank you Matt for the quick turn around, the exterior was a little banged up but the ECU was fine. I installed tonight and the car started but ran rich. I also tried to connect to the ecu to check the parameters but the software said "Consult not available with this license". My questions are why will the software not connect with the ECU it is the latest ver.0.9.2.64 and I used the registration matt sent me int an email. Then why did it run so rich on start up? I thought the base rom was that of the stock Z31 that he copied from the ECU when I sent it to him. I'm thinking it has to do with the modification for the lightning MAF. Is it possible to modify the tune till I get the MAF installed?

I just want to add to this info.
There are some 486 Intel and AMD Pc's that use a version of Pheonix Bios and AMI Bios that has an executable flash.exe file to burn the on-board flash bios to the motherboard. Some are 28 pin, some are 30 pin, some are 32 pin.
If you possess one of these computers (as I have a 32 pin version), it is very easy to turn what would seem like a useless CPU into a very reliable chip burner.
In the bios, you could change the settings "Cache BIOS to Disk" or "Cache BIOS to RAM" (If I remember, this is BIOS Shadowing). It will then load the computer, load your boot disk with DOS on it, and load you into the A: prompt which you can then feed a disk with the flash.exe and the bin file that contains the proper Fuel Map/Nistune BIN file.
You can then remove the factory ROM chip from the motherboard without shutting the computer down, pop yours in, and go to town with flashing any BIN file you want on there.
I have an ECS K7VZA motorboard which is for an old AMD setup, and I've used it numerous times in the past to make HomeBrew mod-chips for the original XBOX console before they released various solutions to make this process easier and more configurable.
Just more info if anyone cares to pull their old junker out of the attic.

ok so i read the manual a few times before junping ito this, using my 87 maxima ecu just to see if it works. so i removed the eprom chip installed the socket, soildered the 4 wired to the 6802 processor. placed the old rom chip in the socket and it still works so im like sweet i did it right. then when i put in the nistune board in..... nothing..... the chip in the center of the 28pin outline (on the nistune board) gets hot(noticed this as i pulled it off of the board) so i was like DAMN how could i fubared this. went over the manual again checked solder points all good. placed in the old rom chip and it still works, so whats the deal is the board that i got defective??

i'd get the 88 ecu just for the simplicity of soldering those 4 wires lol. no messing with dropping them onto a chip, just put em right into the pcb and be done with it.
i'm not sure about the 86 ecu but i know the earlier ecu's had problems with a lean surge condition, i am also unsure if nistune can get rid of that, but it wouldn't be worth it to try and find out.
the one thing you run into with the 88t+ ecu's is the daughterboard for the detonation sensor, which is a pain to work around when installing nistune.

Ok just did a little more research. The problem I see is that the 02 sensor is different.
If I was to take use a 89NA board, I would need to re-wire and go with the larger bung for the Zirconium o2. How much of a Pita is the daughter-board on the Turbo ECUs? I've read that the Turbo Proms can be swapped onto the NA board, can't I just remove/disable the daughter board? Is there an advantage to running with the Titania o2 over the Zirconium? Anyone have a decent photo of the guts of an 89T ECU so I can see what I have to work with?

I know that J30 Maxima use the same injector o-rings as the SR20's and VG30DE/TT. So it is possible the Z32 injectors will fit.
The R50 Pathfinders and Quests use the same injectors which are smaller in diameter and use different o-rings as listed above. This means those injectors will not fit the R50 or V40/41

The information is available on the NIStune website. But in short, the different types are merely revisions and hardware changes to accommodate the different types of ECUs each car has. Once installed and plugged in, it works essentially the exact same in every single car. You basically just specify to Matt when ordering which type you need.

If you change impedences, you don't have to change the ecu. You can use drop in resistors if you have a high impedence ECU on low impedence injectors or its fine if you have a low impedence ECU on high impedence injectors. Theres no need to swap nistune from ECU to ECU.

I have two ECU's I could send in, one auto 84T and one Manual 84T ECU. The car was an auto originally but is currently running the 5spd ECU. Both work well however I was thinking I might one day build the car for the dragstrip with a paddleshift driven automatic. I wasn't sure if there were much differences but figured I may need the auto ECU's capabilities in the future for TPS so I would send it in instead of the 5spd? Any thoughts?

Hey guys new to the forum and just starting to learn and research my options for a fuel managment system. I have a 70 Datsun 510 with a vg30 from a pathfinder. The motor has stock internals with headers and MSD ignition system. I initially wanted to purchase Nistune for my tunning needs but read some info on the web that the product does not support my ECU. I then switched my learning interest to Megasquirt. I recently was told that guys here are using the z32 Nistune on the Z31. Anyways thats not my case either. I have a pathfinder ECU. The numbers on the ecu are 37 MECM-V180 B1 0120. Can anyone verify Nistune has a product that I can use on this ECU or should I just stay focused on the idea of Megasquirt or JWT (even though I dont want to mail it everytime I add a performance mod). My plans are Holset H1E, Intercooler and 440cc injectors or larger. Please let me know. Thanks

I started using Nistune when it used a Romulator. You did the tune and then burned it onto a chip and inserted in the socket. So I would think that if you have the bin file on the computer you should be able to load it into the nistune software and then upload it to your ecu.

Once you have tuned your setup properly with nistune and have a reliable runner, is it possible to pull the changed values and burn a prom to run the ecu with your new preferred tune?
Some classes of racing only allow a stock ecu with nothing extra connected to it but do allow burning a new prom.

exactly, and even if the internal daughter board wasn't allowed, I highly doubt they are gonna make you pull out you ecu and open it just to see…

MS was choosen for the platform. It has many Inputs/outputs, you can long damn near anything, you have antilag, 2step, 3step. Can run many injectors, fully sequential, Multiple coils, Get rid of MAF. Cableless tunning(bluetooth), SD card input so you can save your tunes,datalogs ect and look at them whenever you want. Essentially i can do anything and everything with it. It can be installed on pretty much any car. For $602 bucks for MS3/V3.57, wiring harness, ect. I couldnt pass it up. The down side is you have to wire the car yourself (Not a big deal, heck the wiring harness wires are labeled for you). Not many have Utilized it with a vg30 engine so R&D is still on the platter. No base maps. I think the biggest down side is the FSM. There is so much misinfomation it causes you to go crazy because your believeing what your reading, but its totally taking you off course blindly. After all i got the car running pretty decent. Put at least 1000 miles on it. Ive had it on 35psi+(boost gauge stops),22-25 psi regularly, timing is locked @ 10degrees :lol: ....Got EGT? Currently, there is no clutch and the diff went by by. Looking for a shell to swap everything over. The motor is still holding strong, compression is @ its usuall 90psi-100psi across the board. Hasnt changed in years :mdr

im planning to use it on mine and brian's, it has 2 optional outputs. with different voltage scales. should be in your paperwork, telling what the scales equate to. one I think it 0-1V other is (I think) 0-5v. then to figure out what nistune scalers are… part of me wants to say theyre selectable.

Once you burn the eprom, you no longer need to connect the laptop to nistune to drive the car. You need to leave it installed, as the map is contained within the nistune card. You can take the map you made and flash it to an eprom chip, then install the chip if you wanted to get rid of nistune afterwards. I don't know if I'd recommend that though!

You need to buy the DLP Design A/D converter. You connect your 0-5v analog output to it and it outputs a digital signal to your PC via USB for logging. The converter is $30 and there's a link to it from Nistune's FAQ page in the list of supported wideband units. Any wideband with a 0-5v analog output will work with Nistune using this converter.

Careless and GE both answered it. Nistune's people will tell you pretty much the same thing. Nistune's software runs on your laptop and you connect it to your Nistune daughterboard-equipped ECU; once you get a tune you like you use the software to burn it to the NVRAM in the Nistune daughterboard and it becomes a standalone. You can disconnect the laptop after that but you still own Nistune. If you change injector sizes you can hook up the laptop again, run Nistune, re-tune, re-burn, disconnect the laptop again. You can do this as many times as you want.
Think of the tune like a can of paint and the laptop running Nistune as a paint brush. Once you take the paint brush out of the can, clean it and put it away, it's not like the paint disappears from your walls. When you want to paint a different color, you get the paint brush out and use it again until your wall is painted, then you clean it and put it away. The new color still stays on the wall, and the paint brush doesn't disintegrate or become non-functional after applying a coat of paint.

your question has been answered.
when you BURN the image after tuning it, it stays on the chip that is on the nistune board.
you do not need to use the nistune software after.
if you remove the nistune board, you are removing the chip that houses the ROM/BIN for your tune.
if you want to remove the nistune board from your ECU to sell it but you want to retain the tune, you have to get someone to burn a 28pin EEPROM just like the one that was taken out of the board to install nistune. You take your bin file you edited (basically your tune), burn it to the new chip, insert it into the socket where your nistune was, essentially making it a stock ECU again, but with a different program/tune.
The PROM is basically a chip like a CD-RW disc. You burn it, and the files stay on it until you reburn it.
Nistune is essentially a computer with a writer that allows you to burn the CD-RW/PROM.
The ECU is basically a CD player with only minor write capability (i.e. clearing codes).
You dont need to boot up the computer (nistune) to load up the CD (eeprom) if you have the disc in the player (ECU).
and i guess your car would be the speaker system or monitor. lol

He was using a professional de-soldering tool.
If all you have access to is one of these:
you can nip the pins of the old Eprom with fingernail clippers
(if you don't have a small set of dikes) and remove the chip, then
with a soldering iron on the underside, suck the solder (and pin remnants) out the top.

So my friends board flipped out when on the dyno, MAF, RPM and injection control had glitched, then somehow burned into the board. - found this out after sending it back to Matt. he corrected it, repaired a pin for me, and is on the way back now, for $25. excellent customer service! Says it's working properly now!
I had swapped his board for mine, to realize it was a hardware/major software issue with his. hopefully all is well now!

Dealing with Nistune again, trying to get my friends car to run right. I started with a base 88 map, corrected for 560cc injectors and Z32 MAF. it will fire up and run ok. but watching AFR's it's rich. start to adjust latency (no idea what it should be since we cant find a spec for RX-7 560's) and K to get it to lean up some. when it's around 14 or so it starts running rougher. if I hold the throttle at a higher RPM it richens up again, I adjust the map, etc to get that section to make the O2 read 13-14 or so (this is all while sitting still), I can actually feel it miss, and stumble at times, as the wideband swings between 13 and 15… Im wondering if either it's just my latency and K being incorrect, or some other setting, or if we actually have bad/clogged injectors. They came from Evolution Injection (my brother got from him too, and are great) flow tested, etc.
any thoughts?

well, it's in a roastin' down pipe, so i'd say its relatively in a stock location. I threw a video of the issues on the FB page… once I figure out the best way, I'll put it on here too. when I held it at a steady throttle, sitting still, at around 3500 the AFR would literally bounce from 13-16. almost blip to 16…16+. makes me wonder about the injectors, being that at higher RPM it does it more/worse.

updated my own issue thread. but no, issue has not be resolved, even after a reflash from autovaughn. I DID swap my well running ecu into the problem car, and just adjusted the injector K to suit the larger injectors, and it still does the exact same issue. ignition system, other than the cap and rotor has all been swapped out/tested. (cap and rotor are new/non leaking/only have a few miles on them)
