The Datsun S130 series, much like the earlier S30 series, is prone to rust. While these cars are not the most rust-ridden classics, they don’t resist salty conditions as well as some others.

The main reason for this is that during production, Datsun/Nissan was not heavily focused on rust prevention. The frame was spot-welded and coated with seam sealer to protect the welds and metal — but as many of us know, this protection didn’t hold up over time.

One of the most common areas to rust is the mounts for the rear crossmember. To inspect this area, remove the seats and lift the carpet. Rust here can be expensive and time-consuming to repair.

Look for rust around the tire wells, especially along the front edge of the hood. Another problem area is the seams on the rocker panels under the doors — watch for rust bubbles forming under the paint.
