I'm trying to remove my differential, and the service manual says to remove the drive axles first. I've unbolted them from the hubs and they won't move. I tried prying the other end out of the diff, but it won't come out all the way. Is there some kind of clip inside the differential that holds the axles in? It will come out about 2 inches and then jack to the side at an angle and stop like I've hit a wall. The car is an '88 non-turbo.

remove the lower shock bolt, and anti-sway bar pull the control arm down and it should pop out

Yeah. They should be allowed to come straight out, otherwise they could

bind up and stick. There is a clip ring in the end of the spline shaft that

keeps it from floating around too much. If you are able to pull it out

2 inches, then you have already disengaged the clip ring and it should

pull out. Also, maybe try rotating it as you pull it.

I got the shock and sway bar off, but now the half-shaft is stuck. I got it all the way out of the differential (It pretty much spins freely), but it won't pop out the last little bit. Its sitting on the rubber seal at an angle. I can't get it to go back in or pop out the rest of the way. It will move when I pry on it, but it just won't jump out of the hole. Should the other end be separated from the wheel? I removed all the bolts and popped the clips off, but it won't move at all. It still spins the wheel like the bolts weren't the only think holding it there.

I removed mine with the shafts. I dropped the whole sub frame. I think its 6-8 bolts plus the shock bolts. Lot easier IMAO.

Crossmember bolts, diff bolts, shock bolts, brake lines or calipers if you dont want to bleed em.

I am having the same problem removing the half shafts. Are there any bolts behind the rubber boots that need to be removed to pull out the shafts? I have a bad clanging noise either in the half shaft or in the sub member when I go around a corner. I am trying to remove both parts on the dr's side. Its also hard to remove the rubber boots as well without destroying the boots. I guess the clips on the boots are done when you remove the boots. Any help would be appreciated!

OK, here it is plain and simple as previously stated.

you unbolt the half shaft from the the hub and let it dangle for a few.

Then you unhook the swaybar from the A arms.

Then you unhook the shock from the A arms.

This should let the A arm move enough you can push it down out of the way and pull the shaft out.

Like that. Then get a pry bar between the diff pumpkin and the axle metal case and pop it out.
