Well, the deeper I go the more i find. I can't find a mark or scratch in the cylinder, but this wear is pretty obvious.

I've decided to replace the piston, but i figured I'd throw up the pictures as I'm still not sure what caused this… My bet is carbon is the culprit as most anything else would show on the cylinder wall or the heads.

^ agreed. it would be visible on the walls if it was after the fact. although aluminum is much softer than cast iron bores- they would still show scuffing at the very least.

The pistons in my spare engine all had similar wear. The cylinder walls were clearly worn as well. Do your other pistons have wear like that?

Only place it's noticeable is the bottom of the cylinder here the grooves show in the carbon buildup. No marks anywhere in the metal of the cylinder wall… And no, cylinder 5 is the only one with any marring.
