Got under my 87 today to figure out where the clunk and whining was coming from. It seems to be from my trans, I noticed that when I let off the clutch the drive shaft would clunk and have a ting noise. I then continued to investigate and it felt like it started in the middle of my trans, the car shifts and runs fine with no grinding or slippage while driving. Has anyone else had an issue like this and what did you do to solve the problem? If a trans will be needed, who on here has one for sale, or where can I take mine to have it reworked??? I live in NC!! PS I've replaced all the bushing, rear wheel bearings, u-joints ( Rockford drive lines), and diff mount!! Thanks!!!!

if needs replaced just get 30A. inside the trans would really only be bearings. if its when you let off the clutch might be the throw out bearing or pressure plate. the ting i would assume is pressure plate. when we the last time you replaced the clutch? also the throwout bearing has a metal spring clip that holds it to the clutch fork.

To be honest I have'nt replaced the clutch, pressure plate, or the throw out bearing. My car has 240,000 on the odometer. I will jack it back up, check the fluid level and then preceed to changing the clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing. One more thing, will these items cause the trans to whine, I get that when I'm at a constant speed; say around 35 - 55 mph? THanks!!!!!

not sure about the whine but make sure to leave the car level when checking fluid level. you can reach up under the drivers side and remove filler plug then stick your finger in and feel fluid. at 250k u probably need a new clutch kit

Also check engine and trans mounts. That can "clunk" under load/coasting.

Throwout bearing and pressure plate will not clunk under load. The damper springs on the clutch disc can be worn excessively and "may" make a noise when load applied/removed.

Check fluid level, and change it out if not already done so.

Make sure the exhaust is not sagging as it can hit the rear subframe with torque loads.

If you add or change fluid use ONLY fluid rated as GL4. Don't let suppliers tell you GL5 is backwards compatable because it is not.
