I went with a MSA catback and custom made the downpipe out of mandrel bent pieces. Check out the TURBO FAQ for recommendations. ---- '''nismopu:''' (2010-02-01 16:30:45) He has a N/A the sound difference between a turbo z and an N/A is night and day. My reccomendation is either turbo your car now instead of spending 300 to 500 on silly cat backs or build your own for less and have an exhaust shop put it on. No muffler you choose will make it sound ricey. Your not dealing with a buzzy 4cylinder, this is an old school tractor v6. Lol! I liked the sound of my N/A with just a straight pipe in place of the muffler but for your case any magnaflow, or dynomax muffler will work. Peace. ---- '''TurboDreams:''' (2010-02-01 23:58:20) Tractor V6? I'm not familiar with the VG30E being used in a tractor, much less a V6. As a rule of thumb MOST tractors are Inline engines, preferably I6s ---- '''NissanXRMA:''' (2010-02-02 01:29:06) He's comparing it to a tractor engine, unlike the ricer high pitched sound. ---- '''michaelp:''' (2010-02-02 01:49:17) {{Quote|user=|}} VG30Es sound pretty high pitched and ricey NA straight piped (no cat) 2 1/4" exhaust /w cat, no muffler (dont let the muffler you see fool you, its not hooked up…lol): http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/ … t=NAZ2.flv (outside) http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/ … nt=NAZ.flv (inside) 2 1/2" exhaust w/o cat or muffler: http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/ … NY0819.flv (outside) http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/ … cruise.flv (inside) ---- '''NissanXRMA:''' (2010-02-02 01:51:43) I've never straight piped an N/A so i wouldn't know i guess. ---- '''michaelp:''' (2010-02-02 01:54:35) {{Quote|user=|}} I posted 4 videos, whats your opinion? with a cat or some sort of resonator, they're fairly deep sounding, but no cat is high pitched and raspy between 3k and 4k IMO ---- '''NissanXRMA:''' (2010-02-02 02:04:30) With the cat it sounds nice and throaty. The inside video w/o the cat sounded ricey when you shifted. Was that the 86 when it was still an N/A? Old video… ---- '''michaelp:''' (2010-02-02 02:11:14) {{Quote|user=|}} Yeah, it was the 86 as a NA. Had a TON of rasp around 3k-4k then it smoothed out kinda like a turbo higher.... ---- '''85NA2T:''' (2010-02-02 04:47:09) 3 inch open downpipe FTW. ---- '''michaelp:''' (2010-02-02 05:02:25) {{Quote|user=|}} For real! I ran mine with no downpipe at all Sunday night before coming back to West Chester for the exciting schooling I get (LOL). Sounded sick! ---- '''bust0023:''' (2010-02-02 13:16:26) [quote]'''michaelp wrote:''' {{Quote|user=85NA2T|3 inch open downpipe FTW. For real! Sounded sick! Were your ears ringing?!}} No, infact I drove my 86 with just a downpipe for a few months…I once drove it NA /w just a downpipe too, which is A LOT louder than a turbo w/o a downpipe. ---- '''bust0023:''' (2010-02-05 04:24:32) Aaahhh, didn't know you were turbo. I used to race my Neon with an open header. Next season the strip started a dB limit. Haven't raced since. And wow, that car was L-O-U-D. I can see why they do the soundcheck now… ---- '''TurboDreams:''' (2010-02-06 16:55:49) If you want to hear a NA VG (technically a VE30DE) go on youtube and look for "magnaflow muffler maxima" find a video by I think his name is "indiextronic" or some shit. On maxima.org that's Pearl93SE. Great sounding car though it does sound a little ricey. I am aiming for a similar sound with my car, I have the magnaflow muffler and some 304 already. Only problem is finding a good shop in Florida. LHT Performance (very nice Honda/Acura shop that is active on Tampa Racing quoted me over $200) though I really can't blame them, they say they have a $5000 tig welding machine and the guy went to school for 5 years to learn to use it, they've been around for 13 years too. ---- '''Matt89:''' (2010-02-06 19:41:11) I have NEVER heard a NA vg with a stock motor that does not sound ricey/raspy above 4k rpm. ---- '''michaelp:''' (2010-02-06 22:46:44) {{Quote|user=|}} Heres a M30…http://s41.photobucket.com/albums/e295/ … NY2002.flv Again, gets a bit raspy over 4k..lol ---- '''2slick85z31:''' (2010-02-07 10:14:46) {{Quote|user=|}} go into st pete and talk to the guys @ rainbow exhaust on 38th st, they sold me an exhaust for my FC GTU full 3 1/4" from my racing beat header all the way back into a magnaflow ceramic can. costed me all of $60. also, get on Tampa Racing and look up Genium Performance, they used to do exhausts and they might still do them, call em and ask for Matt, tell em Zack(me) or Eric(ex co-worker) sent you if you ever decide to go there (btw Genium is also in st pete located off of 66th st) ---- '''TurboDreams:''' (2010-02-08 00:36:55) I might have to check rainbow out, they were one of my top 3 choices after a quick search on tamparacing. I googled genium and I'm liking their site, they seem very straightforward and honest (my two main concerns) site is [http://www.geniumperformance.com/ http://www.geniumperformance.com/] in case anyone else needs to know. Also, michaelp from what I've heard maxima exhaust manifolds flow very well for logs, I highly doubt they flow 1% of what a Z31 exhaust manifold does. Our intake manifolds? You make me laugh, the maxima intake manifold flows better than anything except debatably a pathfinder manifold stock, gutted Z31 vs J30 stock probably favors the Z31, not a whole lot of info is available on porting a J30 manifold. I intend to do it as soon as I get a new dremel. ---- '''Crazy:''' (2010-02-08 03:31:53) CM 3 inch [archived image: march09016.jpg] stock down pipe VS 3 inch [archived image: march09020.jpg] This is a piece of 3 inch exhaust pipe with section of the part that goes under the crossmember inside for size comparison.
